Bakstenen poortgebouw met school uit 1920-1922 naar ontwerp van Jan Stuyt.
Omschrijving
Uitgestrekt symmetrisch bouwwerk op een H-vormige plattegrond ter hoogte van twee bouwlagen onder een kapverdieping met schilddak gedekt met leien. Het centraal geplaatste, in natuursteen uitgevoerde poortgebouw springt iets naar voren ten opzichte van de aangrenzende bouwvolumes en is licht verhoogd ten opzichte van de lange vleugels. Een reperterend patroon van vensters en dakkapellen verleent de gevels een regelmatig aanzien, verdere verlevendiging door middel van detaillering, kleur- en materiaalgebruik, bijvoorbeeld een plint van Kunradersteen; raamomlijstingen, pilasters en fries van Maastrichts krijt, bolvormige ornamenten, zo te noemen "stuiters". Boven de poort een tondo waarop een moeder met kind en vroedvrouw. Inwendig beschikt het gebouw over de oorspronkelijke hoofdindeling van gangen, (aangrenzende) vertrekken; trappenhuizen met smeedijzeren leuning en houten handlijst, granieten treden, tegelvloeren en marmer, glas-in-lood, terrazzo; medaillon van gips met afbeelding van dr. I.Ph. Semmelweis.

Het bakstenen poortgebouw met school is van algemeen belang wegens de architectuurhistorische betekenis als proeve van architect Jan Stuyt en als structureel en representatief gebouwtype binnen het ensemble van de voormalige vroedvrouwenschool; voorts is het object zowel uit- als inwendig gaaf behouden gebleven en vervult het gezien vanuit het oosten een rol als blikvanger wegens de hoge prominente situering en de uitgestrekte presentatie aan de straatzijde zodat de door Stuyt beoogde monumentaliteit goed tot uitdrukking komt. Vanuit historisch standpunt fungeert het object als symbool van de ontwikkeling en voortschrijding van de medische wetenschap, met name op het terrein van de zuigelingenzorg.

Extensive symmetrical structure on an H-shaped ground plan at the level of two storeys under a roof truss structure with hipped roof covered with slate. The centrally placed gateway building, executed in natural stone, projects slightly forward in relation to the adjoining building volumes and is slightly raised in relation to the long wings. A repetitive pattern of windows and roof dormers lends the facades a regular appearance, further enlivened by means of detailing, colour and material use, for example a plinth of Kunradersteen; window surrounds, pilasters and frieze of Maastricht chalk, spherical ornaments, so to speak "stuiter". Above the gate a tondo depicting a mother with child and midwife. Internally the building has the original main layout of corridors, (adjoining) rooms; staircases with wrought-iron balustrade and wooden handrail, granite steps, tile floors and marble, leaded glass, terrazzo; medallion of plaster depicting Dr. I.Ph. Semmelweis.
