Inleiding

Opdrachtgever was A.J.T. Hofman.

Introduction

The brick building in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style was built in 1888 as a LIQUOR DISTILLERY according to a design by architect Nicolaas Molenaar. The client was A.J.T. Hofman. Later the building was taken into use as a cheese warehouse by the firm Ruys. Since 1968 a restaurant has been established there. To this end a new shop front was created on the ground floor. The upper storey is in use as a residence. On the arch field above the attic window it states ANNO DOM MDCCCXLV (1845). This is probably an erroneous overpainting. On Molenaar's design drawing it clearly states ANNO DOM 1888 and later when the firm Ruys is established in the building this date in Roman numerals (MDCCCLXXXVIII) is noted. On the closed arch field above the window on the first storey "Likeurfabriek" had been written.

Description

The former brick liquor distillery on a rectangular ground plan is situated on the corner of the Rijnstraat and the Romeinsteeg. It consists of two storeys under a high gabled roof at the rear with the ridge perpendicular to the road. The roof is covered with new concrete tiles. The wooden gutter rests on carved blocks. On both sides are two small roof dormers placed under a zinc pointed roof.

The brickwork is in stretcher bond. The plinth executed in dark brick is provided with a natural stone coping. The building displays a clear horizontal articulation. The ground floor and storey are terminated by a profiled sandstone drip moulding with below it in the front facade a decorative frieze of red brick and yellow sandstone. The corners of the gable and window surrounds receive extra accent through sandstone blocks. The front facade is provided with large ornamental wall anchors.

The front facade, crowned by a stepped gable, is symmetrically arranged. The ground floor has a modern shop front. On the first storey in the centre is a large window (originally double doors) placed within a round-arch niche, flanked by a narrow round-arch window with wrought-iron grille. On the attic storey within a round-arch niche a double attic shutter is placed. On the arch field, which is decorated with stucco work it states ANNO DOM MDCCCXLV (1845). On either side is a round-arch window and a blind arch field. Directly above the double door is a small wooden canopy with below it an opening for. A wrought-iron weather vane in the shape of a boat crowns the whole.

The side facade on the Romeinsteeg is divided into five bays. On the ground floor are a door and four sets of coupled round-arch windows placed with decorative grille and a passageway. On the storey are five sets of rectangular windows placed within round-arch niches. In the relieving arches alternating decorative brickwork is applied.

Against the rear facade is a single-storey high extension built with a modern balcony and a wide arched window in the side facade. This remains outside the protection.

Valuation

The building constructed as a liquor distillery and later taken into use as a cheese warehouse is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value as a good example of a late nineteenth-century commercial building in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style, and as an example from the oeuvre of architect Nicolaas Molenaar.
