Inleiding
Het dubbele WINKELWOONHUIS met detaillering in neorenaissance- en neogotische trant is gelegen op de hoek van de Kerkstraat en de Havenstraat. Het is in 1888 gebouwd naar ontwerp van de architect Nicolaas Molenaar. Mogelijk heeft de architect Molenaar zich laten inspireren door het tegenover gelegen zestiende eeuwse raadhuis. Opdrachtgever was A.J.T. Hofman, die tegelijkertijd een likeurstokerij aan de Rijnstraat 44 liet bouwen. Het pand Kerkstraat 5 was oorspronkelijk alleen woonhuis en Kerkstraat 7 pakhuis. Thans is bij beide op de begane grond een winkel gevestigd.
Omschrijving
Van het voormalige dubbele winkelwoonhuis bestaat het linkerdeel, Kerkstraat 5, uit twee bouwlagen onder een gebroken schilddak evenwijdig aan de straat en het rechterdeel, Kerkstraat 7, uit twee bouwlagen onder een zadeldak haaks op de weg met aan de voorzijde een trapgevel en aan de achterzijde een tuitgevel met schouderstukken. De daken zijn gedekt met gesmoorde platte Friese pannen. De voorgevels zijn opgetrokken in rode baksteen in staandverband met een natuurstenen plint. Speklagen, blokken en ornamenten zijn in zandsteen uitgevoerd. Boven de vensters bevinden zich geprofileerde ontlastingsbogen met een driepas toogvulling, geaccentueerd door middel van gestileerde koolbladmotieven. De trapgevel is versierd met een zandstenen pinakel en ornamenten. Voorts zijn decoratieve smeedijzeren gevelankers toegepast.
Aan de voorzijde bevinden zich links binnen de oorspronkelijke vensteropeningen een moderne venster- en deurpartij en op de verdieping twee schuifvensters met een drieruitsbovenlicht. Rechts is op de begane grond een opvallende houten winkelpui aangebracht onder een geprofileerde kroonlijst met decoratieve consoles voorzien van blad- en bloemmotieven en verschillende gezichten of maskers. De bovenlichten van de winkelpui hebben fraai geometrisch glas-in-lood. Op de verdieping zijn twee schuifvensters met drieruits bovenlichten aangebracht en op de zolderverdieping één venster met bovenlicht.
De rechterzijgevel is gepleisterd. Op de begane grond bevinden zich drie nieuwe vensters en op de verdieping een zesruitsschuifvenster.
Tegen de achterzijde is een tweelaags hoge aanbouw onder een plat dak aangebouwd, in gebruik als opslagruimte. Dit valt buiten de bescherming.
Interieur Van het oorspronkelijke interieur is nauwelijks iets bewaard gebleven. Opvallend is het vloerniveauverschil bij Kerkstraat 7. Dat van de voorkamer boven ligt hoger dan die van de achterkamers.

The double SHOP-DWELLING HOUSE with detailing in neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic style is located on the corner of the Kerkstraat and the Havenstraat. It was built in 1888 to the design of the architect Nicolaas Molenaar. The architect Molenaar may have been inspired by the sixteenth-century town hall opposite. The client was A.J.T. Description
Of the former double shop-dwelling house the left part, Kerkstraat 5, consists of two storeys under a broken hipped roof parallel to the street and the right part, Kerkstraat 7, of two storeys under a gabled roof perpendicular to the road with a stepped gable at the front and a spout gable with shoulder pieces at the rear. The roofs are covered with burnt flat Frisian tiles. The front gables are constructed in red brickwork in stretcher bond with a natural stone plinth. Speck-courses, blocks and ornaments are executed in sandstone. Above the windows are profiled relieving arches with a trefoil tympanum, accentuated by means of stylised leaf motifs. The stepped gable is decorated with a sandstone pinnacle and ornaments. Furthermore decorative wrought-iron gable anchors are applied.
On the front there are on the left within the original window openings a modern window and door assembly and on the first floor two sash windows with a three-pane fanlight. On the right a striking wooden shop front is provided on the ground floor under a profiled cornice with decorative consoles provided with leaf and flower motifs and various faces or masks. The fanlights of the shop front have beautiful geometric leaded glass. On the first floor two sash windows with three-pane fanlights are provided and on the attic storey one window with fanlight.
The right side gable is rendered. On the ground floor there are three new windows and on the first floor a six-pane sash window.
Against the rear is a two-storey high extension under a flat roof, in use as storage space. This falls outside the protection.
Interior Hardly anything of the original interior has been preserved. Striking is the floor level difference at Kerkstraat 7. That of the front room is higher than that of the rear rooms.
