Inleiding

Introduction

STUDIO BUILDING of the NCRV with associated BICYCLE SHED in Dudok style, built in the period 1938-1941, designed by architect J.H. van der Veen from Amsterdam. In the hall a large stained-glass triptych from 1940, designed by glazier Max Nauta. The building originally contained one large and five smaller studios, grouped around a centrally located announcer's cell, which is accentuated on the exterior by the tall tower. An underground passage connected the adjacent Villa Henriëtte, which was fitted out as an office. The studio building is situated in undulating terrain, with a rectangular pool in front of the south facade, where the terrace projects forward at the central risalit. N.B. The post-war extension of the studio building on the east facade falls outside the protection.

Description

The studio building forms a largely basement-level compound building volume, consisting of several flat-roofed components of varying size grouped around a tall octagonal tower. Due to sound insulation, a so-called concrete "box-in-box construction" was used in the construction of the studio spaces. The flat roofs have overhangs and the facades are built in yellow brick. The facades of the studios are almost blank, the public and office spaces are characterised by large glazed walls with (originally) steel frames. On the ground floor in the west, south and east facade a continuous horizontal series of large three- and four-light composite window and door sections with fanlights and partly the original steel frames. The (former) main entrance and a second entrance section are located in the west facade. The slightly raised central risalit of the south facade has four bays with two door sections to the terrace at the pool. Above the ground-floor storey, the blank facades of the internal small studios project slightly. Around the base of the tower a narrow horizontal band of windows with cut-off corners, which illuminates the central hall in the building. In the tower four storeys of small rectangular windows and at the top a decorative crown. The larger studio spaces are located in the two tall trapezoidal building volumes on the north side. In the almost blank north facade two doors providing external access to these studio spaces. On the east facade of the largest studio on the ground floor the connection with the post-war extension. Above that several asymmetrically placed windows with glazing bars and a door to the balcony. Internally the original floor plan layout has been largely preserved with the studio spaces around the central hall. In the south facade of the entrance hall is the large stained-glass triptych. In the central panel a female figure symbolising the NCRV among several important church buildings in the Netherlands. The left panel contains the parable of the sower and in the right panel a reaper, sheaf-binder and a farmer. In the large concert hall part of the original, somewhat baroque-formed acoustic ceiling has been preserved.

West of the studio building is the elongated, partly open, flat-roofed bicycle shed with garage, built in the same yellow brick as the studio building.

Valuation

The NCRV studio building with associated bicycle shed is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a largely intact and representative example of a radio studio building in Dudok style, characteristic in typology and design. The building is of great urban planning importance because of its image-determining location at the Bergweg with the tall tower as an important landmark.
