Inleiding
TUINBEELD van de halfgod Hercules door Ignatius van Logteren (1685-1732) in Barok-stijl vervaardigd in 1720. Het beeld staat samen met het beeld van Neptunus dat door dezelfde kunstenaar gemaakt is, in het voorste deel van de overtuin bij het hoofdhuis Bisdom van Vliet.
Omschrijving
Tuinbeeld gehakt uit Obernkirchner zandsteen op een sokkel van hardsteen. Het beeld stelt Hercules voor gehuld in een leeuwenvel met een knots in de beide handen, staande op een bedwongen monster. Het beeld is op het voetstuk gesigneerd met I. van Logteren en gedateerd 1720. De sokkel loopt vanaf de onderzijde taps toe en is op de vier zijden voorzien van een verdiept veld.
Waardering
Het tuinbeeld is cultuurhistorisch van algemeen belang als onderdeel van de overtuin behorend bij het hoofdhuis Bisdom van Vliet. Het beeld kan tevens beschouwd worden als een belangrijk voorbeeld van 18e eeuwse Noord- Nederlandse beeldhouwkunst uit het oeuvre van de beeldhouwer Ignatius van Logteren. Bovendien bezit dit beeld ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van de diverse sierelementen in de overtuin.

GARDEN SCULPTURE of the demigod Hercules by Ignatius van Logteren (1685-1732) made in Baroque style in 1720. The sculpture stands together with the sculpture of Neptune made by the same artist in the front part of the far garden at the main house Bisdom van Vliet.
Description
Garden sculpture hewn from Obernkirchner sandstone on a base of hard stone. The sculpture depicts Hercules clad in a lion skin with a club in both hands, standing on a subdued monster. The sculpture is signed on the pedestal with I. van Logteren and dated 1720. The base tapers from the underside and is provided on all four sides with a recessed panel.
Valuation
The garden sculpture is of general cultural-historical importance as part of the far garden belonging to the main house Bisdom van Vliet. The sculpture can also be regarded as an important example of 18th century Northern Dutch sculpture from the oeuvre of the sculptor Ignatius van Logteren. Moreover, this sculpture possesses ensemble value as part of the various ornamental elements in the far garden.
