Inleiding

Description
Introduction
BOEZEM PUMPING STATION 'De Hooge Boezem achter Haastrecht' (also known as 'S.I. van Nooten') with machinist's dwelling is in Eclectic style, as evidenced by a foundation stone, built in 1872 as a steam scoop-wheel pumping station. It was built on the initiative of S.I. van Nooten, chairman of the waterboard of the same name, who also served as representative of Lopik. The occasion was the construction of the Waaiersluis near Gouda in 1856, as a result of which water could no longer be discharged at low water. This made an auxiliary pumping station necessary to strengthen the windmill-based drainage.
The boilers were located in the left part (east), the steam engine in the middle, the steam engine and the scoop wheels were situated in the right part.
In 1913-1914 the auxiliary steam pumping station was extended in style with, at the location of the scoop wheel, the third westernmost building mass and converted into a diesel installation with two centrifugal pumps (Gebr. Stork & Co) with double intake, which discharged the water through the Oosterse and Westerse sluices via settling basins. In the extension came a machinist's dwelling for the second machinist. The chimney on the south-east corner was demolished. The windmill-based drainage was abandoned and - with the exception of the hull of the sixth mill - the mills were demolished. The fore-boezem also fell into disuse. Electrification of the pumping station followed in 1948-1952.
In 1919 an internal conversion took place in which a transformer room was created in the former boiler house. Until 1992 the pumping station functioned as such. Since then it has served a visitors' centre and has a tourist and museum function. To this end an internal conversion took place, in which, among other things, a staff room was fitted in the former boiler house. The two centrifugal pumps by Stork (Hengelo) from 1913 have been preserved. One electric motor was sold and replaced by an example from 1947.
Description
Detached single-storey engine house with an internal dwelling, consisting of a rectangular building mass linked by three hipped roofs, of which the western one is as wide as the middle one but at the rear somewhat shorter and covered by a flat roof. The roofs, whose ridge direction is perpendicular to the road, are covered with Dutch tiles. The facades have a relatively high plinth and drip mouldings of grey-painted plasterwork and are articulated by lisenes set out in fair-faced coursed brickwork of grey brick, which are terminated by an encircling frieze with mouse-tooth moulding. The white-plastered spandrels are provided with horizontal scored joints. Grey brick is also visible in the arches above the doors and windows. The arched windows are fitted with cast-iron window traceries. In the dwelling part there are single and composite windows with timber frames and glazing bars.
At the front facade (north) the left bay consists of three arched windows and the right one of two. The middle bay has an arched window on the right and on the left a double door with an arch-shaped fanlight fitted with cast-iron tracery. Against the hardstone voussoir of the arch-shaped relieving arch an iron lantern is attached. To the right of the door a foundation stone is mortared in with the text: "S.I. van NOOTEN/11 May 1872".
This middle bay is terminated by a frieze with a hardstone stone bearing the name of the pumping station: "DE HOOGE BOEZEM ACHTER HAASTRECHT". The left side facade (west) is six bays long and makes a small setback after the two northern bays. The three right (north) bays each have a large arched window and the three left (south) bays each have a small arched window positioned high in the facade.
The right side facade (east) consists of a section three bays long, each provided with an arched window. In the cross wall is one arched window flanked by lisenes. The rear recessed facade section is divided into two bays, of which in the left (southern) an entrance door to the service dwelling is placed and in the right (northern) a four-paned sash window. On the upper storey each bay has one (simplified) window.
The rear facade (south) is divided into two bays. The left is of the dwelling part and has a door with fanlight on the right and to the left of it on the ground floor and upper storey two windows. The right bay consists on the ground floor of an arched window with to its right a two-paned door with fanlight, accessible via a flight of steps.
In the machine room is a granito tile floor and the walls have wainscoting. Against the south wall is a commemorative stone marking the electrification in 1952.
The western water outlet is located at the Westerse Hogeboezemsluis, also called the Westerse sluis. To replace the sluice, in 1872 a discharge pipe was built, of which the end consists of two elongated walls of yellow brick in the form of transversely-placed trough vaults. The eastern water outlet at the location of the Oosterse Hogeboezemsluis was provided with concrete walls in 1914.
Valuation
The pumping station 'De Hooge Boezem achter Haastrecht' is of general interest on account of its cultural-historical value due to its water management significance as a representative and rare example of a pumping station from the third quarter of the 19th century within the built-up area at a location where since the Middle Ages a discharge point onto the Hollandsche IJssel already existed. Because of this situation it is moreover of urban planning importance. It forms part of the historic structure of the village scene and has a clear spatial relationship.
Furthermore, there is a special ensemble value due to the positioning diagonally opposite each other of the pumping station and the dwelling, both located on land tongues, between water inlets and outlets.
The pumping station is moreover of general interest on account of its architectural-historical value as a well-preserved and characteristic example of a pumping station in Eclectic building style from the third quarter of the 19th century. The building components are relatively well-preserved in main form, material use and detailing.
