The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

MACHINIST'S DWELLING built in 1873 in eclectic style with influences of chalet style, belonging to the pump station 'De Hooge Boezem achter Haastrecht (1872) situated diagonally opposite. At the rear there is a small orchard.

N.B. The wooden extension on the northeast side dates from c. 1953 and falls outside the protection.

Description

Detached single-storey building on a rectangular ground plan beneath a gabled roof with muted Dutch tiles, the ridge direction perpendicular to the road. The facades are constructed in yellow IJsselsteen brick (Flemish bond), with red brick applied decoratively in the rusticated pilasters (blocked lisenes) on the corners, the bands under the windows, the segmental and round arches above doors and windows, the framing of the round window, the dentil moulding between ground and first floor, the stepped moulding (crenellated frieze) under the eaves and the facade surfaces on which the date is inscribed. Both gable ends are terminated by wooden weather vanes, the one at the front being executed with decoratively carved hanging fretwork and crowned by a finial. The strikingly richly executed front facade is a symmetrically arranged stepped gable with the main entrance in the centre, a panelled door with semicircular fanlight. The arched T-sash windows on either side of the entrance are fitted with shutters. On the first floor in the centre a round cast-iron tilting window with rose glazing bars (rose window). On either side of this projecting masonry rectangular facade surfaces with bevelled corners, on which in high relief the text: "ANNO" and "1873". The side and rear facades are provided with cream-coloured rendered plasterwork and are finished below the wooden gutter moulding with wooden shingled frieze. Below the eaves of the side facades are cast-iron bar anchors.

The symmetrically divided rear facade has a similar facade arrangement to the front facade, albeit simpler in design. On the ground floor in the centre before the entrance door a wooden draught porch is placed. On either side of it are sash windows with leaded glass fanlights and shutters. On the first floor a double casement window is placed in the centre.

Interior The original main layout, with rooms on either side of a central corridor, is reasonably well preserved. A door at the end of the corridor to the kitchen is fitted with etched glass.

Valuation

The service dwelling is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as part of a representative and rare pump station from the third quarter of the 19th century within the built-up area, which was constructed in the same period.

The service dwelling is of urban planning importance because of its situation diagonally opposite the pump station, whereby the functional relationship is emphasized in a visual and spatial manner. It is moreover part of the historical structure of the village character.

The service dwelling is also of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as a characteristic example of a service dwelling, which like the associated pump station was constructed in eclectic style in the third quarter of the 19th century. The structural components are sound in main form, material use and detailing.
