Inleiding
Slanke, 47,2 meter hoge WATERTOREN is gebouwd in 1910 in een Traditioneel Ambachtelijke stijl met Neorenaissancemotieven door Visser & Smit uit Papendracht. Dit constructiebedrijf kreeg onder meer bekendheid door de diverse watertorens die zij hebben ontworpen. Het ijzeren reservoir van de toren heeft een inhoud van 250 m3. De watertoren maakt deel uit van een complex van dienstgebouwen aan de dijk in Lekkerkerk.
Omschrijving
Watertoren, bestaande uit een dragend metselwerk in rode baksteen en onderverdeeld in een met steunberen verstevigde onderbouw, heeft een conische schacht en een uitkragend reservoir onder een plat dak. Een gepleisterde waterlijst sluit het trasraam af. In de noordzijde is de vernieuwde entree geplaatst; daarboven is een gedenksteen ingemetseld. Aan de bovenzijde is de onderbouw voorzien van een gepleisterde sierband. De schacht is horizontaal geleed door iets uitkragende, gepleisterde sierbanden. De staande meerruits vensters die rondom in de schacht zijn geplaatst, bevinden zich onder rondboogvormige boogtrommels. De overgang van schacht naar het iets uitkragende reservoir is gemarkeerd door een uitgemetseld rondboogfries. In het reservoir zijn rondom lange staande vensters geplaatst. Het reservoir wordt afgesloten door een opengewerkte bakstenen borstwering met kantelen.
Waardering
De watertoren is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als illustratie van een stadium in de ontwikkeling van de drinkwatervoorziening in Nederland in het algemeen en in die van de Krimpenerwaard in het bijzonder. Het is een karakteristiek voorbeeld van een utilitair gebouw uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw, vormgegeven in een Ambachtelijk Traditionele bouwstijl met Neorenaissancemotieven. Description
Water tower, consisting of load-bearing masonry in red brick and subdivided into a buttressed substructure, has a conical shaft and a cantilevered reservoir under a flat roof. A rendered drip moulding closes off the tuff frame. On the north side the renewed entrance is placed; above it a commemorative stone is laid in. On the upper side the substructure is provided with a rendered ornamental band. The shaft is horizontally articulated by slightly cantilevered rendered ornamental bands. The tall multi-light windows placed around the shaft are located under round-arched arch drums. The transition from shaft to the slightly cantilevered reservoir is marked by an embedded round-arched frieze. Long tall windows are placed around the reservoir. The reservoir is closed off by an openwork brick parapet with crenellations.

The water tower is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as an illustration of a stage in the development of drinking water provision in the Netherlands in general and in that of the Krimpenerwaard in particular.
