Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Around 1870, on the instruction of Mr. Kersbergen, director of a salmon fishery, a BARN was built next to his director's dwelling. The building is executed with elements from the Neorenaissance and Chalet style. Characteristic of the buildings built against the dyke along the river is, due to the risk of high water, the presence of a flood step. Striking is the application of Oegstgeester roof tiles, a fairly rare type of roof tile that was manufactured in Oegstgeest in the second half of the 19th century.
Description
Detached barn built against a dyke is constructed from a rectangular ground plan in yellow Ijssel brick under a gabled roof covered with Oegstgeester tiles, slightly projecting. At the street side (north) the roof edge is adorned with carved ornamental gable rafters and beneath the gutter line there is hanging ornamental woodwork. The ridge direction is perpendicular to the road. The facades and wall openings are enlivened with decorative brickwork in the form of bands, panels and crow's foot patterns in bright red and black brick. Lisenes mark the gable corners. In both, symmetrically arranged, gable ends are two segment-arched cast-iron windows placed with lancet-shaped glazing bars. At the top a semicircular window. The western long facade has on the right an arched entrance, consisting of a simple door behind a flood step. To the left of this is a segment-arched cast-iron window with lancet-shaped glazing bars.
Valuation
The barn is of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value as a characteristic example of a barn built against a dyke from the third quarter of the 19th century, which is strikingly richly decorated with elements from the Neorenaissance and Chalet style and as a recognizable element has the presence of a flood step. Belonging to a monumental dyke house that originally served as the director's dwelling of a salmon fishery, the barn is of importance because it recalls an industry important to this region in the 19th century. The barn is intact with regard to principal form, use of materials and detailing, particularly of the exterior, whereby the application of Oegstgeester roof tiles provides special added value. The barn is part of a complex that is of urban-planning importance due to its image-defining location on the Lekdijk, an important exit road from Lekkerkerk.
