The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

PATRONAGE BUILDING from 1926 and CHURCHYARD WALL. The patronage originally belonged to the R.K. parish H. Naam van Jezus, whose church lies diagonally opposite here. The patronage is a design by architect L. de Vries built on the site where the medieval church of Lierop stood until 1880.

The patronage building stands freely on the plot and displays a regional variant of the Amsterdam School style. The front or west facade faces Van Dongenstraat, the south facade faces Florastraat. On the north side the yard is bounded by the partly remaining wall of the churchyard that lay around the medieval church. This wall runs from Van Dongenstraat to Florastraat.

In later years a nursery school was established in the building until 1983. Thereafter a dwelling with training centre and now office. On the north side, a new entrance section was created in 1980 for the centre. The interior has been altered.

Description:

The patronage building consists of one storey under an overhanging gabled roof covered with Tuile du Nord tiles. The front facade contains, beside the main entrance with double door, four six-part windows with four-pane fanlights and eight-pane lower sashes. The main entrance has a brick planter and wooden canopy on either side. In the other facades also glazed windows. The masonry consists of red/purple/yellow nuanced machine-made brick laid in Flemish bond with the application of horizontal bands among other things in the basement. The masonry of the basement and courses consists of red brick.

On the ridge of the roof two wooden lanterns.

On the east side of the patronage building a one-storey extension under a flat roof from the building period partly under glazed roof structure. The churchyard wall/scarp wall, which separates the north side of the yard, is presumed to be late medieval. Stone size 5.8 x 10.5 x 23.0 cm (according to Verhees 2.5 inches thick and 9.5 long). The wall is covered with a saddle-back coping.

Valuation

The patronage building and the churchyard wall are of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism, in particular the manner in which parishioners cultivated religious life outside the church. It is also significant as an example of the typological development of the patronage building. The building has architectural-historical significance through the style and detailing in a regional variant of the Amsterdam School. It is also significant as an example of the oeuvre of architect De Vries. It has moreover significance as successor to the medieval church, of which part of the ancient churchyard wall still emphasizes the building history and historical dimension of the location.
