Inleiding

Introduction

The MILLER'S HOUSE at St. Jacobiparochie was founded in 1862 by Klaas Jan Krab, close to the grain mill "De Welkomst" also established by him in 1844; the complex also comprised a barn and a farmhouse. In 1880 the mill burned down and was rebuilt in 1881. After the fire the mill was no longer rebuilt around 1975 and the still-existing barn and farmhouse (which are located to the southeast of the dwelling) have been substantially altered. In the southeastern corner of the back garden there is also a small brick building with a marquee roof, which is said to have been built as a tuberculosis cottage. The miller's house, of the "parsonage" type, is situated on a spacious plot to the south of the main road (the road between St. Jacobiparochie and St. Annaparochie). It is set back relative to the road and faces north. The house is built in Eclectic style, with the application of Neo-classical elements. Around 1900 an extension was added to the south side, which was subsequently altered in the nineteen-sixties.

The barn, the farmhouse and the so-called tuberculosis cottage are of subordinate significance for protection under national auspices.

Description

The miller's house has a rectangular floor plan and is one storey high. It is covered by a truncated hipped roof with tiles and four chimneys with coping plates. On the roof slope above the rear facade a roof dormer has recently been renewed. The building is constructed of brown brickwork. A tall cornice with frieze -in which a plastered mirror-field motif above the front facade- and cornice conclude the front facade and the side facades. The cornice follows the pentagonal outline of the plastered corner pilasters in the corners. The natural stone plinth is bounded by a cordon moulding. The front facade is symmetrically divided by the central projection. In the central projection, which is bounded by tall angular pilasters, are the entrance section and the roof dormer with four-pane windows, both provided with a plastered, moulded surround. The wooden double door with grilles and fanlight is situated beneath a semicircular plastered portico with natural stone steps. The hexagonal windows, which rest on the cordon moulding above the plinth, are provided with a plastered surround with elliptical arch. In the middle of it is a plastered cartouche. In the western side facade is a six-pane window with surround and cartouche and further back in the facade a renewed window. In the east facade are two six-pane windows with surround and cartouche and a smaller window. The rear facade is partly obscured from view by the extension. On the right in the extension the old rear door is still present and beside the extension is a six-pane window. The INTERIOR is original in its layout and contains many original interior components. On either side of the hallway, tiled to the back rooms (tiling presumably from around 1900), are two spacious rooms. These contain, amongst other things, the alcove beds, the richly moulded (rectangular) coffered ceilings, the window sills, panelled shutters and marble fireplaces with wooden chimneypieces. In the right room a doorway to the renewed kitchen has been made in the middle of the alcove bed wall. The rear section of the hallway is covered by broad stone slabs. On the left is the study room (in which, amongst other things, the original wooden ceilings, doors, window sills and panelled shutters) and on the right the kitchen.

Valuation

The miller's house at St. Jacobiparochie is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance:

- as a particular remnant of a complex that was an expression of a socio-economic development;

- because of the high-quality aesthetic quality of the design;

- because of the use of materials and ornamentation;

- because of the largely present architectural integrity of the exterior;

- because of the exceptional architectural integrity of a number of interior components;

- in relation to the visual integrity of the surrounding landscape.
