Inleiding
Het in fasen tot stand gekomen pand van leerlooierij Huijben (gebouwd van omstreeks 1895 tot 1918) is oorspronkelijk gebouwd als drielaags nathuis met droogzolder, voorzien van eenlaags uitbreidingen en die later zijn verhoogd, terwijl het geheel ook in omvang is verdubbeld.
Omschrijving
Hoofdzakelijk in baksteen opgetrokken pand van drie, deels twee bouwlagen met een droogzolder die in hout is geconstrueerd. Het pand is voorzien van steekankers. De samengestelde kap met overstekken is onder andere voorzien van gesmoorde en rode oud-Hollandse pannen. Opvallend zijn de afdakjes boven de hijsopeningen. De gevelopeningen zijn afgestemd op de functies, dus: grote vensters bij de vertrekken die onder andere in gebruik waren als kantoor, kleinere vensters bij het nathuis met toebehoren, luiken als afsluiting van de hijsopeningen, luiken ter plaatse van de droogzolders enz.
Inwendig bevat het gebouw onder andere een aantal onderdelen van de oorspronkelijke functie (zoals hijsinstallaties) en een gave constructie met Philibertspanten op de droogzolder.
Waardering
De leerlooierij is van algemeen belang vanwege: - cultuurhistorie, als voorbeeld van de voor westelijk Noord-Brabant zo typerende en in de bouwtijd van het pand op zijn hoogtepunt verkerende lederindustrie; aangezien de lederindustrie zich hoofdzakelijk in dit deel van het land manifesteerde is er naast het lokale en regionale belang tevens een landelijke importantie aan toe te kennen; tevens vanwege de voor leerlooierijen kenmerkende typologie bestaande uit een (in fasen tot stand gekomen) nathuis met daarboven droogzolders, als zodanig ook uitwendig herkenbaar en inwendig nog van enige inventarisstukken voorzien; - architectuurhistorie, vanwege de samenhang tussen in- en exterieur, uiteraard vanwege de functionele invulling van het gebouw; tevens vanwege de eenvoudige, doch verzorgde vormgeving; - ensemblewaarde, vanwege de markante verschijning die - vooral vanwege de met de fabriek samenhangende schoorsteen - op lokaal niveau van belang is voor het silhouet van Oosterhout; - gaafheid en herkenbaarheid van het door functionele eisen tot stand gekomen gebouw dat een kenmerkende ontwikkeling van een klein naar een middelgroot bedrijf inhoudt én dat de functionele opbouw (nat- en drooghuis) vertoont; - zeldzaamheid van dit soort gave en herkenbare fabrieken.

The phased construction of the tannery Huijben building (built from approximately 1895 to 1918) was originally constructed as a three-storey wet house with a drying loft, provided with single-storey extensions which were later raised, while the whole was also doubled in size.
Description
Primarily brick-built building of three, partly two storeys with a drying loft constructed in wood. The building is provided with brick anchors. The composite roof with overhangs is provided, amongst other things, with dampened and red old-Dutch tiles. Notable are the canopies above the hoist openings. The facade openings are aligned with the functions, thus: large windows in the rooms which were used, amongst other things, as an office, smaller windows in the wet house with accessories, shutters as closure of the hoist openings, shutters at the drying lofts etc.
Internally the building contains, amongst other things, a number of components from the original function (such as hoist installations) and a well-preserved structure with Philibert trusses in the drying loft.
Assessment
The tannery is of general importance because of: - cultural history, as an example of the leather industry which was so typical for western North Brabant and which was at its height during the construction period of the building; since the leather industry manifested itself principally in this part of the country there is, in addition to local and regional importance, also a national importance to be ascribed; furthermore because of the typology characteristic for tanneries consisting of a (phased) wet house with drying lofts above, as such also externally recognizable and internally still provided with some inventory items; - architectural history, because of the coherence between interior and exterior, of course because of the functional use of the building; furthermore because of the simple, yet carefully executed design; - ensemble value, because of the striking appearance which - especially because of the chimney connected with the factory - is of importance at local level for the silhouette of Oosterhout; - integrity and recognizability of the building created by functional requirements which represents a characteristic development from a small to a medium-sized enterprise and which shows functional layout (wet and dry house); - rarity of this type of well-preserved and recognizable factory.
