Inleiding
In tijden van hoge waterstanden werden zogenaamde dijklegers ingesteld, die zich op bepaalde plaatsen langs de dijk verzamelden. De verzamelpunten zijn gemarkeerd door een zogenaamde DIJKBEWAKINGSPAAL. Hierop werd een lantaarn geplaatst. Men kwam bijeen in het wachthuis, een boerderij achter de paal. Langs de Lekdijk tussen Vreeswijk en Schoonhoven stonden tien van dergelijke genummerde palen; onder afzonderlijke monumentnummers beschermd. Met uitzondering van nummer één zijn de palen nog aanwezig. Paal met daarop nummer tien bevindt zich op het grondgebied van de gemeente Schoonhoven (Zuid Holland). De palen met de nummers 4, 8 en 10 liggen tegenover een peilschaalhuisje. Paal met nummer 4 staat tegenover het polderhuis met het dijkmagazijn. De overige staan bij een waakhuis.
Omschrijving
Aan de Lekdijk West bij nummer 14, staat aan de landzijde van de dijk een dijkbewakingspaal. De vierkante paal steekt ongeveer 160 centimeter uit boven het maaiveld en is vervaardigd van natuursteen. De bovenzijde van het object is voorzien van een profiellijst. Op de rivierzijde van de paal staat het nummer '6' aangegeven.
Waardering
De dijkbewakingspaal is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als overblijfsel van een oude vorm van dijkbewaking. Tevens heeft het object ensemblewaarde door de ligging aan de Lekdijk en door de ruimtelijke en functionele relatie met de overige palen langs de Lekdijk.

Introduction
During times of high water levels, so-called dike crews were established, which gathered at certain places along the dike. The gathering points were marked by a so-called DIKE WATCH POLE. A lantern was placed on it. People gathered in the watch house, a farmhouse behind the pole. Along the Lekdijk between Vreeswijk and Schoonhoven stood ten such numbered poles; protected under separate monument numbers. With the exception of number one, the poles are still present.
