Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: Historische tuin- en parkaanleg (Heidensweg by 1; op de bijbehorende kaart aangegeven met nr. 2).
Het middeleeuwse kasteel lag in een stelsel van grachten waarvan de binnengracht geheel en de buitenste gracht voor een deel nog aanwezig is. Een regelmatig ingedeeld park met rechte met bomen beplante lanen rondom en een vak met elkaar kruisende lanen met een vijver op het snijpunt ten westen van het huis kwam in de jaren na 1734 tot stand. Bestaande structuren als de op het stadje gerichte oprijlaan, de vanouds met eiken en iepen beplante dijk aan de noordkant, de weg aan de zuidkant en de verbindende lanen werden hierbij betrokken. Een recht op het kasteel aanlopende oprijlaan verbreedde zich ter hoogte van het voorplein tot een ronde parterre. Deze lanenstructuur en de vijver zijn nog steeds herkenbaar onder het in de eerste helft van de 19de eeuw aangelegde landschapspark. De veranderingen in landschapsstijl waren eenvoudig, rekening houdend met de terreinomstandigheden waarop een grootse aanleg niet direct voor de hand ligt, en bestonden uit het vergraven van verschillende waterlopen en een deel van de gracht, alsmede uit het aanbrengen van een bescheiden reliëf en beplanting op het terrein van de omgrachte boomgaard 'Het Paradijs' ten oosten van het huis. De volgende elementen in het park zijn van historisch belang:
- de al in de Middeleeuwen bestaande oprijlaan die loopt vanaf de Heidensweg tot aan de Lingedijk, in een hoek van 90º aftakt en bij het toegangshek (zie hiervoor onderdeel 4) recht aanloopt op het kasteel en daarna doorgaat tot de Asperense wetering;
- de met forse boomgroepen omkaderde binnengracht rond het kasteel en de restanten van de buitengracht die van middeleeuwse oorsprong zijn en in de vroege 19de eeuw vergraven dan wel deels zijn gedempt, samenhangend met de veranderingen in landschapsstijl;
- de rechte lanen met eiken en kastanjes rond het park, die onderdeel vormen van de formele aanleg uit de 18de eeuw en reeds op de kaart van Van Deventer (ca 1560) staan aangegeven;
- het vak ten zuidwesten van het kasteel (rechts van de oprijlaan) met een wandelbos waarin een ronde kom en restanten van een kruisvormig padenpatroon uit de 18de eeuw, begeleid door een laanbeplanting van eiken. Van de eiken is vooral het oost-west lopende deel goed herkenbaar. Van de noord-zuid lopende laan is het iets hoger liggende talud en een enkele eik overgebleven. Na 1823 (kadastrale minuut) is de ronde kom met een slingerende beek verbonden met de afwatering aan de zuidkant van het terrein.
- het vak ten zuiden van het huis een door water omgeven eiland, 'Het Paradijs' genaamd. De voormalige boomgaard is in de 19de eeuw landschappelijk ingericht door het grondvlak met een reliëf te verrijken en door de aanplant van enige solitairen. In dit gedeelte stond een theekoepel met zicht op het kasteel, waar de fundamenten nog van resteren. Het eiland is toegankelijk via twee door keien gevormde bruggen met cementrustieke zijkanten (begin 20ste eeuw). Een derde brug ligt over de verbinding tussen de slotgracht en de waterloop rond Het Paradijs.
- het wandelbos ten oosten en noorden van het huis met slingerpaden;
- de in de 19de eeuw tot stand gekomen moestuin met boomgaard ten noordwesten van het huis achter het linker bijgebouw (voorheen koestal en koetshuis; zie hiervoor onderdeel 3);
- de met eiken, iepen, noten en essen beplante Lingedijk en de open ruimte ten zuiden daarvan die vrij zicht biedt op het stadje met de kerk.
Waardering
De TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG behorend tot de historische buitenplaats Heukelum is van algemeen cultuur-, tuinhistorisch en landschappelijk belang:
- wegens de middeleeuwse structuur waarbinnen de aanleg is geprojecteerd;
- wegens de nog zichtbare restanten van een formele 18de-eeuws lanenstelsel en de aanwezigheid van een daartoe horende ronde kom;
- wegens de aanleg in landschapsstijl die over het bestaande park is heen gelegd;

Description of component 2: Historic garden and park layout (Heidensweg by 1; indicated on the accompanying map with no. 2).
The medieval castle lay in a system of moats of which the inner moat is still entirely present and the outer moat partially. A regularly laid out park with straight tree-lined avenues around and a section with crossing avenues with a pond at the intersection to the west of the house came into being in the years after 1734. Existing structures such as the approach drive facing the town, the dike on the north side traditionally planted with oaks and elms, the path on the south side and the connecting avenues were incorporated. A straight approach drive running to the castle widened at the level of the forecourt into a round parterre. This avenue structure and the pond are still recognizable beneath the landscape park laid out in the first half of the 19th century. The changes in landscape style were modest, taking account of the terrain conditions on which a grand layout was not readily obvious, and consisted of the reworking of various watercourses and part of the moat, as well as the introduction of modest relief and planting on the site of the moated orchard 'Het Paradijs' to the east of the house. - the approach drive already existing in the Middle Ages which runs from the Heidensweg to the Lingedijk, branches off at a 90° angle and runs straight to the castle at the entrance gate (see component 4 for this) and thereafter continues to the Asperense wetering;

- the straight avenues with oaks and chestnuts around the park, which form part of the formal layout from the 18th century and are already indicated on Van Deventer's map (circa 1560);
- the section to the southwest of the castle (to the right of the approach drive) with a woodland walk containing a round basin and remains of a cross-shaped path pattern from the 18th century, accompanied by oak avenue planting. Of the oaks especially the east-west running part is clearly recognizable. Of the north-south running avenue only a somewhat higher-lying embankment and a single oak remain. After 1823 (cadastral plan) the round basin was connected with a winding stream to the drainage on the south side of the site.
- the section to the south of the house an island surrounded by water, called 'Het Paradijs'. The former orchard was landscaped in the 19th century by enriching the ground surface with relief and by planting some specimen trees. In this part stood a tea pavilion with views of the castle, of which the foundations still remain.
