The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 7: SALPETERZUURGEBOUW (De Oude Molen 2).

Inleiding

Description component 7: NITRIC ACID BUILDING (De Oude Molen 2).

Introduction

This NITRIC ACID BUILDING was constructed around 1907. In the final phase of the factory this building contained, among other things, a paper machine for nitrocellulose paper. The building is located in the hazardous section, west of the warehouses and the other nitric acid building. It was originally part of the smokeless powder factory. Currently the building is used as a showroom and office. On the north and east sides there is a substantial modern extension dating from the last decade of the twentieth century.

Description

The building has a rectangular plan and is built from smooth, red bricks in Flemish bond. The façades of the building are articulated by tall buttresses with bevelled tops, and rest on a plinth. The long façades are four bays wide and the gable ends three bays. On the corners above the roof gutter are projecting corner buttresses with moulded cover plates. The building is crowned by a gabled roof covered with interlocking tiles de Nord. These roof tiles also cover the top gables. The long façades are divided by two horizontal windows with steel glazing bars in the first two bays. The third and fourth bays are fitted with tall windows with steel glazing bars. Two entrances are incorporated in the plinth of the southern long façades.

The eastern top gable has a wide wall opening beneath a reinforced concrete lintel. A modern passage to the extension from the last decade of the twentieth century adjoins this. Above are three substantial tall windows with steel glazing bars, also beneath a reinforced concrete lintel. In the top is a horizontal window with steel glazing bars. The western top gable has an entrance with steps in front on the ground floor. In the top is a horizontal window with steel glazing bars. The façade furthermore shows various building traces of former wall openings.

Valuation

The NITRIC ACID BUILDING is of general importance,

- as a historically functional component of the complex;

- from the perspective of cultural history and architectural history as a production building from the beginning of the twentieth century;

- as an ensemble through the functional relationship to the other objects of the factory.
