Onderdeel 2:

Component 2:

THE HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to Heeswijk castle is situated approximately two kilometres to the west of Heeswijk and is a centrifugal whole extending around the castle comprising avenues, fields, plantings and outbuildings with sight lines roughly in the four cardinal directions with recognisable elements of the landscape style on a geometric pattern of avenues; one avenue in the south-easterly direction has a winding course. The avenues are planted with summer oak, beech and poplar. In the south of the layout the avenues run on dykes. Partially undergrowth is present in the avenues, in that from the bridge in southerly direction with rhododendron. South-west of the castle an oak wood, the remaining woods consist of poplar, coppice woods (willow) south of the Oude Aa, surrounded by a ditch, also ornamental shrubs. The castle is surrounded by a moat and contains a forecastle and a geometric garden from 1939. West of the castle a vegetable garden and orchard has been laid out, a greenhouse stands on the north side. The meadows on the north, south and east sides of the castle display tree groups and specimens in landscape style. The Aa rivulet meanders south of the castle in an east-west direction. Around the castle and forecastle runs a MOAT WITH ISLAND whereby the moat has a square head shape and the island, situated in the north-east of the moat, is oval in form and planted with weeping willow, Italian poplars and various shrubs. South of the castle a BRIDGE paved with clinkers (largely replaced in the nineteen-sixties of the twentieth century) over the castle moat, consisting of a masonry abutment and a brick bridge section with natural stone interlayer, masoned arch friezes and crenellated bridge railings, adjoining which a wooden bridge on three wooden piles with beam, the bridge railings executed in wrought iron. Against the bridge flanks three ornamental wrought-iron wall anchors have been applied.

NEOFORMAL GARDEN IN THE FORECASTLE from 1939, design by L. Copijn: this garden with lawn is walled and has a rectangular floor plan, the wall articulated at regular intervals by bears and provided with so-called flitch layers; within the wall enclosure a rectangular path pattern within which two main compartments with lawns and flower beds; the garden contains various sculptural works including a number arranged in semicircular hedges in the form of a niche. For the rest the following garden ornaments:

FIGURE OF A WOMAN with peacock in Obernkirchner on hard stone pedestal; FEMALE BUST in white marble, placed on hard stone plinth; FEMALE BUST in white marble on round onyx base and decorated hard stone plinth; FEMALE BUST in white marble, placed on hard stone plinth; WHITE MARBLE FEMALE BUST with sun in the hair, placed on hard stone plinth; BUST REPRESENTING A HERMA FIGURE, made of Obernkirchner sandstone on a hard stone plinth; WHITE MARBLE HEAD with shell in the hair, placed on hard stone plinth; WHITE MARBLE FEMALE BUST with laurel wreath, placed on hard stone plinth; PUTTO in white marble, placed on hard stone plinth; HEAD OF ELDERLY MAN, executed in white marble and placed on hard stone plinth; FAÇADE STONE placed on the ground, representing a swan with crown around the neck, RELIEF IN BENTHEIMER SANDSTONE, (originally façade stone); OCTAGONAL GOTHIC TABLE TOP of Namur stone, provided on the underside with wrought iron construction; GARDEN VASE in Bentheimer sandstone, placed on hard stone plinth of which the cover plate is missing; GARDEN VASE in Bentheimer sandstone with on two sides a medallion in relief; GARDEN BENCH composed of step tread, set on brick supports, the back support formed by four forged wall anchors.

Valuation:

THE HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT possesses general significance because:

- there is a characteristic layout pattern for the landscape style that was in vogue in the nineteenth century, for example in the winding pattern of paths and the small island with planting which is of garden-historical significance;
- the historical setting of the old medieval, defensively oriented, moat as the basis for a later development, being the landscape style, recognisable as a defensive water belt has been preserved but nevertheless integrated in nineteenth-century garden-historical concepts;
- the layout has remained in good condition, has rarity value and represents age;
- the collection of historical garden sculptures and ornaments in variety, number and design quality can be considered rich;
- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
