Onderdeel 1:

Waardering:

KASTEEL MET NEOGOTISCHE GALERIJ EN IJZERTOREN, VOORBURCHT MET POORTGEBOUW EN WONING vertegenwoordigen algemeen belang omdat:

Component 1:

CASTLE WITH NEO-GOTHIC GALLERY AND IRON TOWER, OUTER WARD WITH GATEHOUSE AND DWELLING

Situated in a rural setting, a moated castle of which the oldest part - the residential wing - consists of a main building covered by two parallel hipped roofs with round corner towers and arrowslit towers, the core dating from the 15th and 16th centuries plus an extension of 1835 above presumably 14th-century cellars; the extension was roofed in 1871. The substructure of the terrace on which the bridge lands is a remnant of a square gatehouse tower. The outer wing finds a diagonally directed continuation with gabled roof and round corner tower at the rear. Connected to this as an eastern wing is a 19th-century building, connected by an open neo-gothic gallery as a southern wing to a heavy, round southwestern corner tower, a neo-gothic structure on medieval foundations, the so-called Iron Tower of 1871: this comprises two storeys of which the lower articulation is fitted internally with a neo-gothic gallery whilst the tower is crowned with a spire and a higher constructed half-built stair tower; the gallery of 1871 connects the Iron Tower and the chapel - all three designs are by P.M.F. Snickers -, the gallery is provided with pointed arches, cross vaults and has a crown with fleurons. The present chapel - on the northern side - dates from 1871 and originally an arms hall, stands on larger medieval cellars and at right angles to the residential wing, comprises one storey under a hipped roof; between the two building masses a small water tower of two storeys with spire was erected in the 19th century. In the external walls of the main building, building fragments from elsewhere. Internally various notable rooms including oak staircase with balusters and three spindles of 1655-1672, the walls of this staircase with tiles from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, hall, Chinese room (1876) with paper wall covering and chandelier, knights' hall, an armoury, staircase hall of the 19th century, doors and door surrounds from different periods, tile tableaux, stucco ceilings of 1655-1672 in ink room, white room and corridor between both rooms; in the chapel since 1951 the sculpture work of the rood loft of the Sint Janskathedraal in 's-Hertogenbosch.

The bridge between the castle and outer ward was almost entirely replaced from 1985 onwards. The likewise moated outer ward with gate is an L-shaped, 16th-century brick building, interspersed with ashlar courses, furnished with cross windows, and consists of two residential wings at right angles to each other with an entrance gate. The residential wings are built from one storey with a gabled roof with Flemish gables and stepped gables. The entrance gate has two storeys, a gabled roof and two stepped gables. On the northern side of the outer ward stands a dovecote of two storeys; in the northern direction the walled castle garden extends.

Valuation:

CASTLE WITH NEO-GOTHIC GALLERY AND IRON TOWER, OUTER WARD WITH GATEHOUSE AND DWELLING represent general importance because:

- there is a high, original age and rarity;

- because the building history in the structure from approximately the Middle Ages through to the 20th century is recognisable and as such harbours building and architectural-historical values, in that the monument fulfils the role of document; this developmental course concerns among others the gradual change of function from defensive castle to comfortable residence whereby both functions are interwoven beside and within each other in one historical pattern.

- the castle comprises various notable rooms and spaces to which considerable art-historical and stylistic importance is to be attributed;

- the building fragments collected in and around the monument are characteristic of 19th-century ideas about the collection of historical artefacts and objects whereby the castle has acquired a prominent historical-museum function.
