Omschrijving HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG.
-als gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een parkaanleg in landschappelijke stijl die vroeg in de 19de eeuw tot stand is gekomen;
-vanwege het belang voor de geschiedenis van de tuin- en landschapsarchitectuur;
-vanwege de uit de tijd van aanleg stammende infrastructuur bestaande uit waterlopen en een vijverpartij;

Description
Description HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
The historical garden and park layout situated around villa Schuttersveld originates from the 1830s of the 19th century. On the cadastral plan from 1832, when the plot still falls under the municipality of Lonneker, the plot purchased by De Maere is recorded. At that time there is no question yet of a garden or park layout. On 30 August 1834 the foundation stone for the house Schuttersveld was laid. On the cadastral plan from 1836 the layout of the park can be seen. This layout in landscape style, now largely unchanged, will have been realised between 1834 and 1836. A good picture of the landscape layout of Schuttersveld in the middle of the 19th century is given by an advertisement which, shortly before Schuttersveld would be sold to Van Heek on 16 March 1858, appeared in the Enschedesche Courant. The advertisement states that the country estate laid out in the English manner is provided with "(...) large grass plots and a pasture of approximately four bunder, partly enclosed with a wooden paling for grazing foals or livestock, a vegetable garden with fine fruit-bearing trees, a large quantity of flowering shrubs and trees". The advertisement also provides an overview of the tree stock at Schuttersveld: "(...) approximately 600 standing Beeches, 1600 Oaks, 100 Ash trees, 400 Canada's, 500 fine Pines, 250 Larches partly planted in 1835 and partly in 1842, the ground under these trees being planted with alder and birch coppice". After 1858 no major changes took place; grass plots, vegetable garden and the somewhat thinned tree stock in which however the aforementioned species occur, are present as such and in the south of the layout a part of the pasture can still be recognised. At the front of the house, on the Hengelosestraat, lies a semi-oval grass plot. The grass plot is bordered with a variety of solitary trees (now lime trees, horse chestnuts, maple, oak and beech), in front of the main entrance stand (now) two Robinia pseudoacacia's. The front area is also planted with rhododendrons and azaleas. On the right side of this section (west) a double row of lime trees. Between the Hengelosestraat and the garden there is a separation in the form of fencing. Behind the house, in the south, the park layout is dominated by the meandering pond: an offshoot of the broad meandering stream which largely surrounded the layout. This stream may have been important for cooling and operation of the dye works. Shortly after 1880 part of the stream in the east of the layout was filled in; in the south and southwest the stream still exists today. The small island originally belonging to the layout in the southwest of the stream, where the meandering pond branches off from the stream, is now planted with oak and beech. The banks of the meandering pond were originally spanned by a simple flat chain bridge. Both meandering pond and stream appear for the first time on the cadastral plan from 1836. The stream then still has a second meandering bulge to the west of the house. In 1880 this meander is still indicated on the cadastral plan, a few years later no longer. From the end of the 19th century a water feature also lay in front of the house, as evidenced by a cadastral plan and some photographs from the 1930s. This pond was probably filled in around 1940, after which this part was incorporated into the semi-oval grass plot. South of the house there are several walking paths in the park. These paths were re-laid in the winter of 1994-1995 according to the original pattern. In this part of the park the pond feature is bordered by a somewhat sloping lawn; here stand various solitary trees from the time of the layout, such as a grafted copper beech, sweet chestnut, golden rain tree, weeping beech, magnolia and a series of conifers which separate the park area from the vegetable garden which lies in the southeast of the layout. This vegetable garden which is mentioned in the aforementioned advertisement from 1858 and appears on the cadastral plan of c. 1887 (municipality of Enschede, section K), is located south of the former coach house - now restaurant - and consists of a rectangular enclosed area containing three cold frames, a vegetable garden section and some standard fruit trees. The east side is closed off by a yew hedge and the west side by a wooden fence. To the east of this area traces of a ditch are recognisable with a raised lane running parallel to it consisting of beeches. The gardens belonging to the two service houses located in the northeast of the layout are important for the protection as a green zone. In the park there are some height differences in the west, the foundations of the old chimney of the burned-down dye works can still be seen here. In the far southwest of the complex, south of the stream, lay a garden section which from 1848 formed part of the historical park layout. In 1848 De Maere purchased from Mr De Greve, notary in Enschede, this plot (cad. no. 952) which originally belonged to the Esmarke and lay south of his properties. He also purchased around 1848 a second piece of land (cad. no. 1059) to the west of the aforementioned plot. In this part of the layout a utility garden was laid out, in which at the end of the 19th century a tall wooden greenhouse or 'winter garden' on a square ground plan with elegant wrought-iron supporting structure was built. The greater part of this garden was sold around 2000 and no longer forms part of the country estate. The oaks south of the stream do fall within the boundary. Over the stream lies a brick bridge which is strengthened by means of wall anchors and which connects the two park sections with each other.
Valuation
THE HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of the historical country estate Schuttersveld is of general importance:
-as a well-preserved example of a park layout in landscape style which came into being early in the 19th century;
-on account of its importance for the history of garden and landscape architecture;
-on account of the infrastructure dating from the time of the layout consisting of watercourses and a pond feature;
-on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
