Inleiding
Watertoren, in 1903 gebouwd naar ontwerp en in opdracht van de Utrechtse Waterleiding Maatschappij. Deze maatschappij kwam voort uit de in Luik gevestigde Compagnie Génerale des Conduites d'Eau, die opdracht tot aanleg, financiering en exploitatie van de stadswaterleidingen in de Utrecht en omstreken wist te verkrijgen. De maatschappij werd in 1889 omgedoopt tot de 'Utrechtsche Waterleiding Maatschappij' (UWM). Door de neo-renaissance bouwstijl vertoont de toren verwantschap met de door de UWM gebouwde watertorens van Utrecht (Heuveloord en Lauwershof) en Zeist. De toren is nog steeds in gebruik.
Omschrijving
De WATERTOREN aan de Sophialaan heeft een cirkelvormige plattegrond en bestaat uit een zich verjongende toren met uitgekraagde reservoirbekroning volgens het Intze-type. De vensters hebben natuurstenen boven- en onderdorpels. De toren is 29 meter hoog en heeft aan de voet een doorsnede van 10 meter.
De toren is opgetrokken in kruisverband en heeft drie geledingen. De eerste geleding, afgesloten met siermetselwerk tussen cordonlijsten, bevat de entree in een licht vooruitstekend portaal, bekroond door een timpaan met pinakel. De houten dubbele deur met halfrond bovenlicht wordt omgeven door siermetselwerk en natuurstenen aanzet-, sluitstenen en banden. Boven de ingang is een natuurstenen plaat aan te treffen met de tekst `Utrechtsche Waterleiding Maatschappij'.
