Inleiding

Introduction

OFFICE BUILDING, formerly part of the cigar factory 'Ritmeester', was built between 1910 and 1915 in a style in which Art Nouveau influences can be recognised. The factory halls on the south side have disappeared. On this side a new facade has been erected in keeping with the style, which is of subordinate importance for the protection. The building is located in a neighbourhood where various factories with manufacturer's residences once stood.

Description

The office building with its front facade on the Kerkewijk has a block-shaped layout and consists of two storeys on a rectangular floor plan under a flat roof. The facades, constructed in red brick, are cornice-topped facades with horizontal articulation through a cemented plinth, a continuous plastered moulding above the windows in both storeys and a profiled brick cornice as the roof edge. The facades are. The windows predominantly have two- and three-light frames with glazing bars in the fanlights. At the height of the fanlights in the first storey hardstone lisenes are applied between the windows. In the second storey brick pilasters with hardstone capitals are placed on either side of the windows. The space below the windows is filled with decorative brickwork.

The symmetrically arranged front facade (west facade), three window units wide, is characterised by a central segmental-arched entrance arrangement with entrance portico, furnished with a double door with leaded glass fanlight. On the left is a natural stone letterbox with Art Nouveau ornamentation. The entrance arrangement is flanked on both sides by a three-light window with on either side a small window with glazing bars at the height of the fanlights. The second storey contains in the centre a two-light window with on either side a three-light window.

Both side facades and the rear facade contain a number of two- and three-light windows, as well as some small windows. The left side facade also has an entrance.

The rooms are grouped around a light well with a passage in the second storey. The hall is furnished with a terrazzo floor. The brickwork is executed in a light greyish-blue and cream-coloured handmade brick, partly sintered, and contains accents in the brickwork through form and colour. The walls are partly executed in a chessboard pattern and the door openings have segmental arches with hardstone corbels. On the side opposite the entrance a segmental-arched window with glazing bars is placed. On the right in the hall the staircase to the second storey is situated. The railings are finished with natural stone corners. The ceiling in the hall is furnished with a two-part geometric, polychrome leaded glass window.

Valuation

The building is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as an example of a well-preserved office building from the beginning of the 20th century, in which both in the interior and exterior the influence of Art Nouveau can be clearly recognised through the rich detailing and use of materials. It is also of importance as a reminder of the cigar industry which in Veenendaal underwent a flourishing period at the beginning of the 20th century. It has ensemble value through its location along a road where several relics stand, which demonstrate that here an industrial development was taking place in the early 20th century.
