Description

KITCHEN GARDEN WALLS WITH COLD FRAMES. West of the castle lies the rectangular kitchen garden, the oldest wall of which dates from the 18th century and consists of red brick with a saddle-back of concrete (originally stone). This is described in the bill of sale of 24 October 1746 together with the cold frames; the cold frames are now located on the west side of the garden. The mortared commemorative stone with the inscription 'Frederik Willem Anne 1849' commemorates the renewal and extension of the wall with yellow brick, decorated with block dentil bands and interrupted by pillars with stone capping plates, niches are placed on either side of the playhouse. At the beginning of the twentieth century the wall is extended again using old stone. In addition, a 17th-century stone of arms bearing the coat of arms of Leiden is mortared in, originating from a hostelry at Halfweg (demolished in 1861/67); in the corner of the garden a stone drinking trough in the form of a sarcophagus is placed, originating from the farmhouse.
