Omschrijving

HOOFDGEBOUW.

Description

MAIN BUILDING. A rendered and painted block-shaped country house, built in 1834 in neo-classical style, radically altered around 1875 by the addition of a central risalit with semicircular balcony on the southeast side, the relocation of the entrance to the northwest facade, the replacement of windows and interior.

The country house, positioned at right angles to the Naarderstraat, is a whitewashed block-shaped villa on a rectangular floor plan. The front faces northwest, with the principal living rooms situated such that the view in the southeast direction is optimally achieved.

The block-shaped house has one storey and a mezzanine, is provided with a hipped roof truncated at the top, covered with slates, and is decorated by a broad overhanging drip moulding on consoles. The freely positioned chimneys replace earlier ones on the gable ends. The recessed fields of ground floor and first floor are provided with horizontal grooves. The recessed fields of the mezzanine, still the original, are smoothly finished.

Northwest facade The front facing northwest is divided by means of two rendered pilaster strips into a broad central bay and two narrower side bays in the proportion 1:2:1. Centrally in the central bay is located the classical entrance, which was only installed around 1875, replacing the entrance in the southwest facade. The entrance, double panel doors with a fanlight, is framed by a stone portal, consisting of fluted Corinthian columns on pedestals, which support the pronounced main entablature. At the transition between entrance and window the word 'Larenberg'. Above this is located a round-arched window, flanked by pilasters with capitals, and an arch filled with an arch drum with shell motif. The entrance is flanked on the ground floor by windows with two-panel casement windows with fanlight, on the first floor by six-pane windows opening inward with broad muntins, which are partly still original. For protection simple cast-iron railings have been installed. In both side risalits are corresponding windows. On the first floor the two outermost windows are provided with sun blinds, while the fixing points for such blinds on the other two windows are still present. Above the entrance section is located in the mezzanine a two-light window, as well as the two oeil-de-boeuf windows only installed around 1875.

Southwest facade The southwest facade, which has largely retained its original character, has two window axes, with T-windows on both the first floor and ground floor, provided with sun blinds.

Southeast facade The mezzanine is supported on the southeast side by four pilasters, which in contrast to the other facades are provided with Ionic capitals and bases, and which divide the facade in the proportion 1:2:1.

The facade is dominated by the rendered central risalit installed around 1875, the width of three window axes and terminated by corner pilasters with horizontal grooves. The central risalit is finished by a gently sloping gabled roof overhanging on carved consoles.

Against the central risalit at the height of the bel-etage a semicircular balcony with balustrade, supported by two columns with wooden cladding and artificial stone capitals. The balcony is accessible via three french windows with fanlight, of which the central one is gently arched. On the second floor arched french windows, of which the central one is provided with an overhanging balcony on consoles.

On the bel-etage three french windows with fanlights, with a semicircular terrace in front, which is covered by the balcony. The whole is set in a rectangular terrace with a neo-baroque balustrade, which have been recently installed and as such are of subordinate significance for protection. The two outer axes are provided with T-windows and sun blinds. In the mezzanine above these windows oeil-de-boeuf windows have been installed.

Northeast facade This facade is executed in accordance with the southwest facade, with the provision that in the middle of the mezzanine two two-light windows have been installed. Instead of the windows on the first floor blind niches have been installed, with in the right one a small bell. At the far left and right are off-axis T-windows with sun blinds or shutters. In the middle a low attached portal with the service entrance. On the northeast corner of the house a right-angled garden wall, which screens off the service entrance. This wall is provided on the forecourt side with a bench niche.

Interior The interior of the country house on the southeast side is still substantially original in terms of its layout; provided that by the relocation of the main entrance from the side facade to the centre of the long northwest facade a different hall was created. The floor plan is divided down the middle by a narrow corridor, which in the middle is interrupted by a central hall, where the service stair to the first floor is positioned. The transition from the two corridor halves to the central hall is accentuated by a richly rendered arch formation. Part of the hall is occupied by a service stair installed around 1875. Opposite the entrance is still located the original access to the salon, above which still part of the original stucco decoration dating from 1834 is present. The rest of the hall was adapted around 1875. The floor plan is substantially determined also by the positioning of the rectangular salon in the axis of the house and across the full width of the central risalit. This salon was also redecorated around 1875 and provided with a richly decorated ceiling with Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque elements.

The rectangular salon still retains largely its original size; only on the outside has it been slightly enlarged to the depth of the central risalit. Via double doors in the right side wall one reaches a square room, which has the same finish as the salon. The execution of the stucco ceiling is somewhat simpler and is approximately equal to that in the dining room located on the other side of the salon. This room has a fireplace in neo-renaissance style. Opposite the dining room is located a simple kitchen.

Valuation

The country house is of general importance owing to its cultural and architectural historical value as the historically-functional main component of the country estate Larenberg.
