Omschrijving

Waardering

HOOFDGEBOUW (Huys te Warmont) van algemeen belang:

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege het in oorsprong 16de-eeuwse hoofdgebouw, dat in 1777 in neoclassicistische stijl werd verbouwd;

- vanwege de achttiende-eeuwse inrichting en aankleding van het interieur in Lodewijk XVI-stijl;

- vanwege het achttiende-eeuwse stucwerk met name in de muzieksalon;

- vanwege het gaaf bewaarde ex- en interieur van het hoofdgebouw in neoclassicistische stijl kenmerkend voor de laatste kwart van de achttiende eeuw;

- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description

MAIN BUILDING (Huys te Warmont). The house, originally dating from the sixteenth century, was rebuilt in 1777 in neoclassical style using the old foundations and walls. The whitewashed building of two storeys consists of a front facade with two projecting side wings under a gabled roof covered with Old Dutch tiles. In 1629, as part of an extension designed by Salomon de Bray, the then middle facade was moved forward approximately 1.5 metres, still visible today in the double gabled roof. All window bays are fitted with eighteenth-century multi-pane sash windows with natural stone sills. Some windows are incorporated as blind niches in the wall surface, presumably to maintain symmetry. The front facade consists of seven window bays with a central risalite of three bays, crowned by a pediment containing the coats of arms of Van Leyden and De Thoms. At the centre is the entrance feature framed in natural stone, consisting of a double panel door with a rectangular multi-pane fanlight. The rear facade has the same layout as the front facade: a risalite three bays wide, crowned with a triangular pediment. In the middle of the tympanum, decorated with sculptural work, a small oeil de boeuf has been installed. Against the western side facade are two projecting structures, to which a door provides access. On the left side is a small platform just above the water, which served as a fishing spot (the adjoining room is called the 'fish room'). The right side has a small wooden extension that served as a privy. The outer corners of the building are formed by rectangular tower-like pavilions, which project only slightly from the facade wall. These are topped by a tent roof. The pavilions on the front are heightened with an attic. On the roof ridges of these towers stands an open square with a pear-shaped spire. In the right spire hangs a small bell decorated with the arms of Warmond in Gothic style and the inscription '1392 et vocor barbara'. According to tradition, the bell comes from one of the cloisters founded by Jan van den Woude at the beginning of the fifteenth century. On both towers are mounted clock faces in the form of a hanging clock, these were presumably installed during the 1780 renovation. The pavilions on the rear side consist of four storeys, likewise topped with a tent roof and two undecorated chimneys on the roof ridges (recently renewed). During the restoration of Huys te Warmont (1961/62), the left rear pavilion was found to still possess old sandstone corner reinforcements on the north and east corners. Also found under the plaster layer of the left pavilions were arched masonry window openings. These correspond to old prints depicting the castle before the 1777 renovation. INTERIOR: the decoration of the walls and ceilings is executed in simple Louis XVI style. On the rear side of the main facade is a hall (now divided into two) with restrained panelling in this style. The most lavishly decorated hall is the round music salon in the right front tower with its stuccoed walls and ceiling in neoclassical style. Characteristic is the simple application of decorative motifs and the straight forms of the mouldings. On the walls are four stucco works with picturesque scenes of buildings. These are set in strict hexagonal mouldings decorated with garlands of flowers and leaves. The mouldings hang from stuccoed ribbons provided with bows. In the centre of the ceiling is a round stucco work depicting a representation of learning. Around this are panels with representations of hunting. It is possible that the stucco work was executed by Italian craftsmen, as they were much employed in The Hague and Leiden during the second half of the eighteenth century. In the left rear tower is a cellar vault with cross arches, probably dating from the seventeenth century.

Valuation

MAIN BUILDING (Huys te Warmont) of general importance:

- by reason of its age;

- by reason of the originally sixteenth-century main building, which was rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1777;

- by reason of the eighteenth-century decoration and furnishing of the interior in Louis XVI style;

- by reason of the eighteenth-century stucco work, particularly in the music salon;

- by reason of the well-preserved exterior and interior of the main building in neoclassical style characteristic of the last quarter of the eighteenth century;

- by reason of its characteristic location within the garden and park layout;

- by reason of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
