Inleiding

Introduction

In 1880, designed by D.E.L. van den Arend and built in eclectic style, the MAIN BUILDING of the historic country estate "Vaart en Duin". In 1903, the main building was extended on the rear (W) with an addition, presumably designed by S. Roog. In 1905, a new interior was designed for the main building by Amsterdam architect Ed. Cuypers. In 1962, the building underwent internal alterations. What remains of the interior designed by Cuypers is not known.

Description

The building is constructed in brick and entirely plastered in natural stone motif. On the corners of the oldest part of the building, pilaster configurations have been applied in the plasterwork.

The part of the building dating from 1880 is built on a rectangular plan and consists of a ground floor, first floor and attic storey under a combined roof truss structure covered with red Tuiles du Nord. At the base of the roof plane runs a wooden drip moulding around the entire building. The front facade (E) is three bays wide, with the middle two-window-axis bay projecting slightly and terminated by a recessed gabled roof. The two side bays are each likewise two window-axes wide. Running along the entire ground floor of this east facade is a covered terrace supported by stone columns, with natural stone balustrade and the like. In the window-axes, the ground floor contains double-leaf hinged wooden garden doors with fanlights, and on the first floor wooden T-sash windows or double-leaf hinged wooden balcony doors with fanlights. The windows on the first floor are all fitted with shutters on both sides. In the gable of the central projection there is a window divided into three parts with semicircular fanlight. The southern side facade of the 1880 building component is two window-axes wide, with the left window-axis on the ground floor extended into a three-sided bay with balcony with balustrade. In the right window-axis, there is likewise a narrow balcony with balustrade at first-floor level. The window-axes in this side facade have wooden sash windows on the ground floor and double-leaf hinged wooden balcony doors with fanlights on the first floor. The right window-axis is terminated by a recessed gabled roof and has in the gable a window divided into three parts with semicircular fanlight. The northern side facade of the 1880 building component is two window-axes wide, with the left window-axis projecting and terminated by a recessed gabled roof. In this window-axis there is a wooden sash window on the ground floor and a two-part hinged wooden window with fanlight on the first floor. In the gable there is a window divided into three parts with semicircular fanlight. The somewhat recessed right window-axis has the entrance on the ground floor with a wooden sash window above it. At the entrance there is an inlaid stone with the inscription: "Foundation stone laid by A.E.J. Wilson, born 30 June 1876, 25 March 1880".

The addition dating from 1903 on the west side of the building is three storeys high under a flat roof with overhanging wooden eaves. The addition has an irregular plan. On the south side, the addition consists of two sections, with the left section set back slightly. The right section has among other features three leaded-light windows at first-floor level and one two-part hinged wooden window with fanlight and shutters at second-floor level. The recessed left section of this southern side facade has various types of wooden windows in various sizes. The windows of the western window-axis all have shutters. The rear facade (W) of the addition is irregular in plan with various recessed sections. The rear facade has among other features various types of wooden windows in various sizes. Some windows have shutters on both sides of the frame. The eastern side facade of the addition is only one window-axis wide, with only a wooden sash window on the ground floor.

Valuation

The main building is of general importance as a historically-functional main component of the historic country estate Vaart en Duin and of cultural and architectural-historical value as a representative example of a country house built in eclectic style from the fourth quarter of the 19th century. Furthermore, the building is of significance within the oeuvre of architect D.E.L. van den Arend.
