Onderdeel 7

Inleiding

Component 7

Introduction

PORTER'S LODGE built to the design of A. Salm (1899), a component of the historic country estate Koningshof. The porter's lodge is situated on the north side of the entrance gate on the Duinlustweg. The building stands diagonally in relation to the entrance, which provides optimal sight lines over incoming and outgoing traffic. On the rear side, after the construction period, a volume of one storey under flat roof was built in the south-west corner.

Description

Porter's lodge built on a free floor plan with varied main form through various projecting and recessed building volumes which, with the exception of the stairwell, are all brought together under a gabled roof. The dwelling consists of ground floor and attic storey under overhanging roof, the main ridge direction of which runs from east to west. A supplement to the gabled roof is formed by a half-hipped roof placed perpendicular to it above the stairwell on the south-west side. The roof feet are at various heights. On the north side there is a lean-to. The covering consists of red Mulden tiles. The gable ends of the gabled roof have smooth wind verges. The overhangs rest here on the extended, carved rafters. The overhangs of the other roof parts rest on the extended purlins. On the ridge point of the hipped roof above the stairwell stands a finial. A tall chimney with decorative brickwork forms a strong vertical element in the northern roof slope. The brickwork is built in red facing brick. The underside is formed by a slightly projecting plinth which via a bevelled drip moulding transitions into the brickwork above. Halfway up the plinth is the floor height of the dwelling. Above each window opening is a segmental arch, below each window opening a brick sill. The windows are all of wood. The smaller, mostly rectangular and vertically placed windows have frames that are entirely furnished with a square glazing bar pattern; the larger windows have this glazing bar pattern only in the fanlights and have sash or casement windows with undivided mirror panes beneath. The front facade (S) has a projecting central section with on the ground floor a central six-pane window and on the upper floor two single windows. The recessed section to the left (W) of the central section has an overhung main entrance with panel door. The main entrance has a small stoop at the height of two steps. The canopy is covered with red slate tiles. The recessed section to the right (E) of the central section has a small built-out volume with a segmental arch door. Above this is a lintel in form and material use comparable to the canopy on the left side. The left side (W) has on the right a segmental arch window with a view of the drive. Higher up to the left, halfway up the roof foot of the main roof, there is a segmental arch twelve-pane window to light the stairwell.

The rear side (N) has in elevation a projecting central section under a roof slope extending to upper floor height. This section has a small horizontal double casement window and in the roof slope a gable with horizontal ten-pane window. The right side (E) has a projecting section with a pointed gable. The ground floor has a large T-window and at the height of the attic storey a segmental arch, smaller twelve-pane window.

Valuation

The porter's lodge is of general interest from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical point of view as a historic-functional component of the historic country estate Koningshof, which in its architecture forms a unity with the other buildings by architect A. Salm on this country estate.
