Onderdeel 9
Inleiding

Description
Component 9
Introduction
Former COACH HOUSE (1899-1900) of the historical country estate Koningshof, situated on the north side of the drive to the main building in relation to which it is located at a considerable distance on the north-east side. The former coach house is not visible from the main building. The object, which also contains a horse stable and on the upper storey a former coachman's dwelling, is currently (1993) used as a depot of the Nederlands Filmmuseum.
Description
Coach house built on a free but roughly square ground plan consisting of a ground floor and an attic storey. The main form is varied by various projecting and recessed building volumes beneath a roof made up of hipped, hipped and gabled roofs. The silhouette of the roof is determined especially by the hipped roof, which forms the highest roof volume and which is crowned by a roof turret serving as a ventilation shaft. The roof feet are at various heights. The covering consists of red Mulden tiles. The gable ends of the gabled roof are provided with wind braces with cut geometric decoration. The overhangs rest here on the continuous beams. The overhangs of the other roof parts rest on the continuous ties. Various roof ridges are provided with finials. The composite roof is marked by two chimneys, of which the western example in the decorative brickwork refers to the various flue channels. The brickwork is built up in red facing brick. At the height of the storey floor there is a horizontal strip of brickwork with a decorative function. The brickwork above this strip is pointed in darker mortar. At the bottom, the brickwork has a slightly projecting plinth which transitions via a chamfered roll moulding to the brickwork above. The windows and doors are all of wood and have frames with square glazing bars. The front (SE) has a forward-projecting central section with a pointed gable. On the ground floor of this section there is a centrally placed double carriage door. These are two hinged panel doors with windows over two-thirds of the door height. The square glazing bars in these windows have a heavier arched mirror halfway up. Directly above is a wooden balcony with carved balustrade and with shell-shaped consoles on both outer corners. The balcony is accessible from the storey via a tall door. This tall door forms part of a multi-part frame, set far back in relation to the facade surface, that coincides entirely with a recess in the facade. The pointed gable has a small diamond-shaped window right at the apex. To the right (E) of the central section stands a larger recessed volume with the same roof foot height as the central section. This volume has a double door on the ground floor and is otherwise blank. Only the roof foot is intersected by two roof dormers. The roof ridge above provides space for a built-out ventilation and light shaft with a gabled roof. To the left (W) of the central section stands a lower volume. The roof foot here is at the height of the beam above the carriage doors. This lower volume has a horizontal six-part frame.
The right side (NE) consists of a forward-projecting section to the left (SE) and a lower section to the right (NE) of it. The tall section is the gable end of the previously mentioned, largely blank volume of the front (SE). This gable end has two vertical windows on the ground floor and is closed off by a hipped roof whose roof foot is centrally intersected by a narrow pointed gable under a gabled roof. The narrow pointed gable has a small window. The lower section to the right of the tall section is the long side of a wide rectangular volume (stable section) whose gable end is located at the rear (NW) of the building. The long side has three horizontal (twelve-light) windows under the roof foot. Small iron rings are fastened in the brickwork. Presumably the reins of the horses were tied here.
The rear (NW) contains on the left (NE) the previously mentioned gable of the horse stable. To the right of it stands a recessed gable end that is taller and narrower. The gable is a pointed gable with a shallow pitch. The pointed gable is symmetrical in design. A central double door on the ground floor is flanked by a window that is located directly below the storey floor. A third window is situated centrally in the gable top. The recessed gable end is also a pointed gable. The ground floor has blank openings and the storey has a five-part frame with a tall door and a fluted central fanlight. This frame belongs to the former coachman's dwelling. The left side (SW) has a pointed gable on the left, which in outline is identical to the previously mentioned central section with pointed gable on the front. Instead of carriage doors, the facade has a high window placed below the storey floor. Also, the six-part frame on the storey that gives access to the balcony - part of the former coachman's dwelling - is not located here in a recess. Also, there is no small diamond-shaped window placed in the gable top. To the right of the pointed gable stands the low volume already mentioned when describing the front. With the exception of a panel door - which gives access to the coachman's dwelling - this volume is entirely blank on the south-west side. Above the door there is a somewhat tower-like volume set slightly back under a hipped roof in which the staircase is housed. This volume provides space for a high-rising chimney whose decorative brickwork refers to the various flue channels. This volume also has a small window on the south-east side.
Valuation
The former coach house together with coachman's dwelling and horse stable is of general interest from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as a historical-functional component of the historical country estate Koningshof, which architecturally forms a unity with the other buildings by architect A. Salm on this estate and as an example of a service building dating from around 1900 in a traditionalist building style with influences from the English country house style.
