Inleiding

Waardering

De HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege zijn plaats in het oeuvre van L. Springer;

Part 2

Introduction

Historic park and garden layout. The grounds on which Koningshof is situated have been known from historical source material since the late Middle Ages. Over the centuries there has been some simple building, but nothing more. This is evidenced by the small dune farmhouse.

In more recent times the grounds formed part of the large estate Elswoud. However, when the house was built, this part consisted of uncultivated dune territory, that is to say almost unplanted dunes. Leonard Springer received the commission to design a garden for the house as well. This was designed in mixed style, namely an architecturally geometric garden directly adjoining the house and a landscape-style park around it. At the same time, the dunes began to be afforested with pines (pinus corsicana). In 1913 the property was enlarged with the purchase of an adjacent parcel of dune land, which was likewise afforested. Within this a pattern of cinder paths was laid out. On the southeastern side of the park layout the vegetable garden with some buildings was situated. In 1919, following a design by D.F. Tersteeg, a rosarium was laid out to the west of the house. Meanwhile this has disappeared again. In 1962 the property was bequeathed to the Association Natuurmonumenten which has since managed it as a natural landscape.

Description

HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT. As with the Duinlust situated further along the Duinlustweg, the layout here too is to be distinguished in two parts, a higher-lying dune area and a lower-lying park area. The high dune terrain lies in the northwestern part. The lower park area lies in the southeastern part. On the east side along the Duinlustweg, in connection with the eighteenth-century small dune farmhouse and the service houses, the vegetable gardens are laid out. The architecturally-geometric layout was laid out by Springer directly adjoining the south facade of the house. This layout is lost in detail. The spot is still recognizable as the lower-lying part of the terrain. This likewise applies to the former rose garden, of which the space to the west of the house still remains. The landscape part adjoins directly beside and around the geometric garden. The most striking element is the large open, somewhat hollow meadow. This meadow is bordered by groups of trees. Some of these were planted on small rises which strengthens the movement in the landscape. From the house there are various sight lines across the meadow. Around the meadow through the woodland existed a pattern of winding paths. These are in part now heavily overgrown, but probably still traceable. The layout further consists of winding paths through a park woodland. From the coach house a straight avenue runs in a northeastern direction to the Duinlustweg. The driveway winds along the division of the low and high part at the foot of the dunes. As at Duinlust, there was no pond element in the landscape part here.

Valuation

The HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT is of general importance:

- by reason of its place in the oeuvre of L. Springer;

- by reason of the layout which remains very well preserved in its main features complete with the ensemble of ancillary buildings.
