Inleiding
Het als ZIEKENHUIS gebouwde St. Elisabethsgasthuis (tegenwoordig P.W. Jansen Verpleeghuis) is rond 1880 gebouwd op de hoek van de Bagijne- en de Smedenstraat in classicistische trant. Het pand ligt binnen het beschermde stadsgezicht van Deventer. De gesloten L-vormige gevelwand ligt met de lange zijde aan de Bagijnestraat, met de korte aan de Smedenstraat.
Het interieur is gewijzigd (o.a. in 1941) en aan de achterzijde is een aanbouw rond een binnenplaats gerealiseerd; deze later toegevoegde elementen zijn voor bescherming van rijkswege van ondergeschikt belang.
Omschrijving
Pand bestaande uit twee bouwlagen onder een samengesteld afgeknot schilddak met grijze Hollandse pannen. De gepleisterde gevels zijn aan de straatzijde op de eerste bouwlaag voorzien van schijnvoegen. Deze gevels worden horizontaal geleed door een grijs gepleisterde plint, door twee cordonlijsten direct onder de vensters (waarbij die op de verdieping is geprofileerd) en tenslotte door een geprofileerde rand onder de dakrand en een brede gootlijst. De lange gevel wordt verticaal geleed door kleine verspringingen van het gevelvlak en de vensterindeling.
Op beide bouwlagen diepliggende gietijzeren vensters met kleine roedenverdeling binnen smalle profiellijsten: op de eerste bouwlaag hebben de vensters rondboogvormige bovenlichten met radiale roedenverdeling; op de verdieping recht gesloten vensters onder een kroonlijstje.
Ongeveer centraal in de lange gevel aan de Bagijnestraat bevindt zich een poort van één bouwlaag met een grote houten inrijdeur, die naar een binnenplaatsje leidt. Ten oosten van die deur bevindt zich in het laatste geveldeel een centraal geplaatste entreepartij onder een kroonlijst, bestaande uit een dubbele deur binnen een omlijsting van zij- en bovenlichten met roedenverdeling. Ter weerszijden een rondboogvenster en een klein rechthoekig venster; op de verdieping drie rechthoekige vensters als omschreven.

The HOSPITAL building St. Elisabethsgasthuis (nowadays P.W. Jansen Nursing Home) was built around 1880 at the corner of the Bagijne- and Smedenstraat in classical style. The building is situated within the protected townscape of Deventer. The closed L-shaped facade wall is positioned with its long side on the Bagijnestraat, with its short side on the Smedenstraat.
The interior has been modified (among other things in 1941) and at the rear an extension around an interior courtyard has been realized; these later added elements are of subordinate importance for protection at national level.
Description
Building consisting of two storeys under a composite truncated hipped roof with grey Dutch tiles. The plastered facades are on the street side on the first storey provided with rustication lines. These facades are horizontally articulated by a grey plastered plinth, by two cordon lines directly below the windows (whereby the one on the upper storey is profiled) and finally by a profiled edge below the roof line and a wide gutter line. The long facade is vertically articulated by small recesses of the facade surface and the window arrangement.
On both storeys recessed cast-iron windows with small glazing bars within narrow profile lines: on the first storey the windows have round-arch shaped fanlights with radial glazing bars; on the upper storey straight-closed windows under a small cornice.
Approximately central in the long facade on the Bagijnestraat is a gateway of one storey with a large wooden carriage door, which leads to a small interior courtyard. East of that door is in the last facade section a centrally placed entrance group under a cornice, consisting of a double door within a frame of side and top-lights with glazing bars. On either side a round-arch window and a small rectangular window; on the upper storey three rectangular windows as described.
