Description

MAIN BUILDING (Oostergeest). Soberly designed block-shaped house of two storeys in Dutch-classical style dating from the 1650s; alteration in the detailing in the first half of the 18th century. The building is constructed on a rectangular ground plan built up in brick with a hard stone plinth under a hipped roof covered with Old Dutch tiles. The cornice-topped facade on the front has a symmetrical layout of five window bays consisting of a six-pane sash window on the ground floor and a four-pane sash window on the first floor. Centrally the main entrance with glazed entrance door and fanlight framed by two pilasters of blockwork with a console-shaped capital under a cornice. In the roof slope a roof dormer with a four-pane sash window. The side facades have an irregular infill with multi-pane windows; in the rear facade a door with fanlight adjacent to which are two six-pane sash windows with shutters and on the first floor two four-pane sash windows with shutters. In the middle of the rear facade a roof dormer. Against the rear of the house a lower extension. Adjoining this a playhouse (now called 'hunting room') built on a square ground plan from the early 18th century. The brick building stands on a hard stone plinth under a tent roof. In the west and north facades two and in the east facade one tall window consisting of a multi-pane lower section and a wooden upper section.

In the INTERIOR the 17th-century floor plan has been preserved intact, as well as two 17th-century painted beam ceilings and the 17th-century kitchen with wooden built-in cabinetry. In the rear room stucco work from the mid-18th century in rococo style possibly executed by the Italian stuccadore Moreti and Soldati. In the large room panelling and stucco work (ceiling/chimney piece) in Empire style from circa 1820-1830; the stucco ceiling in the hallway also dates from this period. Carved marble pieces with festoons in the hall, which may be from elsewhere. In the Hunting Room a ceiling painting of birds on canvas. Small 17th-century cellar with flattened barrel vault.
