Inleiding
De BELVEDERE of uitkijktoren is 20 meter hoog en staat op de zgn. "Berg van Brongerga", die een hoogte heeft van 10 meter. De uitkijktoren bevindt zich op het perceel bekend als Tjaarda's Bos. De achtzijdige skeletbouw is in 1924 gebouwd en behoort daardoor tot de oudste uit gewapend beton opgetrokken bouwwerken in Friesland en is de enige betonnen belvédère in Nederland. De uitkijktoren werd gebouwd in opdracht van A.W. Tjaarda, eigenaar van de uitspanning Heidewoud, thans Tjaarda genaamd. Het ontwerp en de uitvoering was van de fa. Boltje & Buwalda, Betonbouwers uit Heerenveen. De toren is gerestaureerd in 1993, bij welke gelegenheid de constructie met behulp van nieuwe wapening en spuitbeton zowel is versterkt als verstijfd. Ondanks deze ingreep is het open karakter van de toren maximaal bewaard gebleven.
Omschrijving
De ruimtelijke constructie van de Belvédère is gefundeerd in de Berg van Brongerga (zie rijksmonument 510464). De achtzijdige skeletconstructie bestaat uit acht zeer dunne kolommen gewapend beton van 17 x 20 cm en 20 meter hoog op een grondvlak van 4,60 x 4,60 meter. De tegenover elkaar staande kolommen worden om de 4,60 meter door betonbalken met elkaar verbonden. De naast elkaar gelegen balken kruisen elkaar steeds te halverhoogte. Aan de binnenzijde van de kolommen zijn negen 12-treeds steektrappen met vierkante trapspijlen en trappalen en acht bordessen gebouwd, die de toren stijfheid geven. De op uitkragingen rustende bordessen zijn 40 centimeter uitgebouwd, behalve de twee onderste en de bovenste. De bovenzijde van de toren wordt afgedekt door een uitkragend plateau van 6 x 6 meter. Het plateau heeft een balustrade met vierkante balusters; de hoekstijlen hebben een afdekplaat. De bovenzijde van de leuningen, trappalen en afdekplaten zijn ingelegd met kiezelsteentjes. In het midden van de eerste dwarsverbinding tussen de kolommen boven de eerste steektrap is een betonnen gedenksteen aangebracht.
