Omschrijving
HOOFDGEBOUW (Groot Engelenburg).
Waardering
HOOFDGEBOUW (Groot Engelenburg) van algemeen belang:
- vanwege de ouderdom;
- vanwege het in oorsprong 17de-eeuwse pand, dat in 1828 in neoclassicistische stijl is verbouwd;
- vanwege de deels gaaf bewaarde 17de-eeuwse ruimte-indeling van het interieur;
- vanwege de aankleding van het interieur in Lodewijk XIV-stijl;
- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de historische tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description
MAIN BUILDING (Groot Engelenburg).
On an irregularly shaped, moated site stands a house originally from the 17th century, which was rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1828 and rendered white. The 17th-century core is formed by the three adjoining rooms on the front elevation. The building, erected on an L-shaped ground plan, consists of two storeys under a pan-tiled hipped roof with corner chimneys and a roof turret on the front dating from c.1642 (adapted in 1828). On either side of the building block are lower side wings of later date (19th century). The roof turret is fitted with a dial face and internally with two bells: a bronze striking bell from 1616 with the inscription 'ÍAN VAN DEN GHEIN HEFT MY GHEGOTEN M CCCCCC XVI' and a bronze bell from 1781 with the inscription 'L HAVERKAMP ME FESIT HORNA A° 1781'. The clock mechanism with striking work are located on the attic floor of the castle. The symmetrically arranged front facade, seven bays wide, has a central risalit of three bays crowned by a triangular pediment. Three round-arched multi-paned doors open onto a 19th-century columned portico of four Ionic columns standing on a five-stepped stone plinth. The columns carry an entablature along which runs an iron balustrade for the first-floor balcony. On the first floor three multi-paned glazed doors with shutters. On either side of the risalit lightly arched eight- and six-paned sash windows. In the single-storey side wings are opening garden doors with shutters leading to a stone staircase. The flat roofs of the side wings are finished with a natural stone balustrade. The eight-bay-wide rear elevation has a regular fenestration pattern of eight- and six-paned windows with shutters and an asymmetrically placed risalit containing a door and window surround decorated in the transitional forms of Louis XIV and Louis XV style. Against this elevation is a raised platform-like terrace dating from c.1910 with a double running staircase along which runs a stone balustrade and an inset armorial stone. The original tiling is still present. The rear elevation view has been altered by the addition of a glazed conservatory (1990). The conservatory and the extension of the terrace to the side of the house (1991) are of subordinate importance for protection due to their recent date. In the basement are barrel vaults from the 17th century and masonry probably from the Middle Ages. In the INTERIOR of note are among others the partly well-preserved 17th-century room layout; stucco work in Louis XIV style; the 17th-century wooden cassette-shaped ceiling painted with cloud skies and decorative borders and a chimney breast with a whitened interior; and in the hall the carved staircase railing in Louis XIV style.

- on account of the partly well-preserved 17th-century room layout of the interior;
- on account of the interior decoration in Louis XIV style;
- on account of the characteristic location within the historic garden and park layout;
