HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Houdringe. Within the eighteenth-century structure and boundary, a landscape-style layout has been realised, to which the first beginning was given in 1772 with the laying out of a wood with winding paths. In the first half of the nineteenth century (before 1823/4 and in 1841) the layout was further developed in landscape style and has since been scarcely altered. Zocher sr. probably took part in the landscape-style layout. The structure of the layout is carried by the central axis (south-north) formed by a formal approach avenue to the house, which continues behind the house in a centrally located sight axis laid out in landscape style. The monumental eighteenth-century approach avenue, which was replanted in 1967, crosses the moat in front of the house, which has been excavated in landscape style into a winding watercourse. On either side of the drive lie meadows, which are furnished in a landscape manner with some groups of red beech trees. In 1968 T.A.M. van Keulen realised a neo-formal style layout in front of and behind the house, whereby the oval lawn in front of the house disappeared (see cadastral plan 1832). Behind the house the extensive sight axis runs over a widening, irregularly shaped meadow, 'Klaverkamp', provided with some tree groups and bordered by scalloped (west) and curved (east) wooded areas. These wooded areas are mentioned in the auction catalogue of 1841 as 'two extensive tastefully laid out walking woods of heavy tall-growing oaks, beeches, fir trees'. The axis continues in a second meadow with, on the western side of it, behind a line of trees, the ice rink (c.1960). This second meadow was later incorporated into the layout, as the auction catalogue of 1841 remarks 'a parcel of building and meadow land (...) provided with some stands of growing trees (...) whereby the view from the manor house extends further and is pleasingly enhanced'. The integration of this meadow with the landscape-style layout that already existed at that time can be seen on the Topographic Military maps from 1872 and 1906. The succession of different open spaces, which narrow and widen, is characteristic of an early landscape-style layout. In the wood on the east side stand various exotic trees; on the west side a group of closely spaced oaks. Directly behind the house (north) there is still a remnant of an eighteenth-century avenue. On the parcel with cadastral designation section B, number 2094, there is a dwelling house (Visserssteeg 1) with associated recently laid out garden. Dwelling house and garden fall outside the protection.
