Inleiding
Watertoren, in 1896 gebouwd naar eigen ontwerp en in opdracht van de Utrechtse Waterleiding Maatschappij. Deze maatschappij kwam voort uit de in Luik gevestigde Compagnie Génerale des Conduites d'Eau, die opdracht tot aanleg, financiering en exploitatie van de stadswaterleidingen in de Utrecht en omstreken wist te verkrijgen. Na een eerste naamverandering in "Compagnie des Eaux d'Utrecht" werd de maatschappij in 1889 omgedoopt tot de "Utrechtsche Waterleiding Maatschappij". De 37,5 meter hoge toren van Zeist behoort samen met die van de stad Utrecht (1896) en Tiel (1890) tot de van voor 1900 daterende watertorens. De toren van Baarn (1903) vertoont stylistische overeenkomsten. De bescherming omvat de toren en het bijbehorende originele hekwerk.
Omschrijving
De WATERTOREN aan de Bergweg te Zeist ligt in de as van de op de Bergweg uitkomende Hortensialaan en kenmerkt zich door neorenaissancestijl-invloeden. De toren op cirkelvormige plattegrond bestaat uit een zich verjongende schacht met uitgekraagde reservoirbekroning. Het overstek van het puntdak is na 1900 gewijzigd,evenals de lantaarnvormige ontluchtingskoker, die is ingekort.De toren is opgetrokken in kruisverband en heeft drie geledingen. De eerste geleding kent een uitgekraagde hardstenen plint en afzaat alsmede een decoratie van verblendsteen bestaande uit een vijftal sierbanden. De met een cordonlijst afgesloten geleding bevat aan de zijde van de Bergweg de entree, bestaande uit een houten dubbele deur met een thans dichtgezet halfrond bovenlicht. De deuren zijn voorzien van gietijzeren siermotieven. Boven de ingang is een hardstenen gedenkplaat ingemetseld met de tekst:"Utrechtsche Waterleiding MaatschappijOp 1 juni 1896 werd ter herinnering aan de openingder waterleiding te Zeistdeze steen gesteld door de burgemeesterMr.J.J. Clotterbooke Patijn van Kloetinge".
De tweede geleding, de torenschacht, is minder gedecoreerd en bevat een aantal smalle vensters en enkele rondboogvensters.
De derde geleding omvat het reservoirgedeelte. De uitkraging bestaat uit siermetselwerk tussen profielijzers. Het muurwerk van het reservoir is door middel van bakstenen lisenen vertikaal geleed en bevat in ieder vlak een vierkant en een langwerpig venster. Boven de cordonlijst aan de bovenzijde van de toren bevindt zich een rij vensters afgewisseld door sierankers.
Het interieur is nog in geheel oorspronkelijke staat en bevat houten trappen. De kop van de toren bevat een uit geklonken ijzer vervaardigd waterreservoir van het type Intze I met een inhoud van 300 m3.
Op het erf voor de ingang van de toren staat nog het originele gietijzeren toegangshek met gietijzeren hekpijlers.
Waardering
De watertoren te Zeist uit 1896 is van architectuurhistorisch belang als vroeg en gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een watertoren met neorenaissancestijl-invloeden en een vat van het Intze-type in een uitkragend reservoirgedeelte. De toren is van cultuurhistorisch belang als zeldzaam voorbeeld van de oudere generatie van watertorens in Nederland. Het gebouw kent voorts een hoge ensemblewaarde als stedebouwkundig element van de gemeente Zeist.

Description
The WATER TOWER on the Bergweg at Zeist lies in the axis of the Hortensialaan opening onto the Bergweg and is characterized by neo-renaissance style influences. The overhang of the pointed roof was altered after 1900, as was the lantern-shaped ventilation pipe, which was shortened. The tower is built in English bond and has three storeys. The first storey has a corbelled ashlar base and offset as well as decoration of brickwork consisting of five ornamental bands. The storey finished with a cordon moulding contains on the side of the Bergweg the entrance, consisting of a wooden double door with a now blocked semicircular fanlight. The doors are provided with cast-iron ornamental motifs. Above the entrance a stone memorial plaque is laid in with the text: "Utrechtsche Waterleiding Maatschappij On 1 June 1896 in commemoration of the opening of the water supply at Zeist this stone was placed by the mayor Mr. J.J. The second storey, the tower shaft, is less decorated and contains a number of narrow windows and some semicircular arch windows.

The interior is still in completely original condition and contains wooden staircases. The top of the tower contains a water reservoir made of riveted iron of the Intze I type with a capacity of 300 m3.
On the grounds in front of the tower entrance stands the original cast-iron entrance gate with cast-iron gate pillars.
Valuation
The water tower at Zeist from 1896 is of architectural-historical importance as an early and well-preserved example of a water tower with neo-renaissance style influences and a vessel of the Intze type in a corbelled reservoir section. The tower is of cultural-historical importance as a rare example of the older generation of water towers in the Netherlands. The building furthermore has a high ensemble value as an urban design element of the municipality of Zeist.
