Inleiding
Het Wilhelmina-monument is onderdeel van het villagebied `Wilhelminapark', dat naar ontwerp van H. Copijn in 1881 onder de naam `Zeisterpark' is aangelegd en in haar geheel als beschermd gezicht is voorgedragen. Toen koningin Wilhelmina in 1898 werd ingehuldigd, vond de `Vereeniging tot Verfraaiing van de Gemeente Zeist en tot bevordering van het Vreemdelingenverkeer' dit een goed moment de nieuwe koningin te eren met een gedenkteken. De Amsterdamse architect Paul J. de Jongh maakte een ontwerp dat in het inhuldigingsjaar is gerealiseerd. Het monument vertegenwoordigd de zogenaamde florale richting in de Art Nouveau beweging, waarvan het in ons land één van de eerste uitingen is. Tuinarchitect Copijn maakte in eerste instantie bezwaar tegen de plaatsing van het monument omdat het volgens hem niet zou passen in het park. Bovendien ageerde hij tegen de huidige lokatie. Omschrijving
Een aan de rand van het Wilhelminapark (Huydecoperwegzijde) geplaatst GEDENKTEKEN bestaande uit een obeliskvormige zuil op een brede uitkragende sokkel, waartegen de west- en oostzijde een plantenbak is gezet. Deze plantenbakken zijn rijkelijk versierd met voluutmotieven, acanthusbladmotieven en meer abstracte krulmotieven die getuigen van invloeden uit de Art Nouveau. Vanaf de plantenbakken verheft de vlakke schacht van de zuil zich verjongend en is versierd met geprofileerde lijsten en krulmotieven. Aan de zijde van de plantenbakken zijn in de schacht de wapenschilden van Nassau en Oranje aangebracht, terwijl aan de straatzijde zich het wapen van Zeist bevindt met daarboven een embleem van het gezag aangegeven door een wetboek. De wapenschilden worden omslingerd door takken met bladeren en vruchten. Aan de achterzijde bevindt zich een duif als symbool voor de vrede. De bekroning bestaat uit een rijks- of koningskroon die is opgebouwd uit acht opengevouwen bladmotieven. Vanuit de hoeken loopt een getoogde rij edelstenen naar het midden, waarop een bolelement is gezet.

A MEMORIAL placed at the edge of Wilhelminapark (on the Huydecoperwegzijde) consisting of an obelisk-shaped column on a broad projecting base, against which on the west and east sides a planter is set. These planters are richly decorated with volute motifs, acanthus leaf motifs and more abstract scroll motifs which are evidence of Art Nouveau influences. From the planters the flat shaft of the column rises, tapering, and is decorated with profiled mouldings and scroll motifs. On the side facing the planters, the coats of arms of Nassau and Orange are applied to the shaft, whilst on the street side is the coat of arms of Zeist with above it an emblem of authority indicated by a law book. The coats of arms are entwined by branches with leaves and fruit. On the rear side is a dove as a symbol of peace. The crowning consists of a state or royal crown which is built up of eight unfolded leaf motifs. From the corners a curved row of gemstones runs to the centre, upon which a ball element is set.
Valuation
The Wilhelmina monument is of cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as an early example of an inauguration monument in which floral Art Nouveau influences are incorporated. Furthermore, it is of ensemble value as part of the villa area 'Wilhelminapark' which was designed by H. Copijn.
