Inleiding

Introduction

Country estate Veldheim, consisting of a country house built in 1908-1909 commissioned by burgemeester C.J. Clotterbooke Patijn van Kloetinge according to designs by architect J. Stuivinga in neorenaissancestyle. In the nineteen-thirties, the rear of the country estate was partially subdivided with the construction of the P.C. Hooftlaan, which now provides access to the object at the rear. Originally the Oude Arnhemseweg served as the rear boundary. The country estate also included a gardener's cottage, located at Jan Luykenlaantje 1. This cottage falls outside the protection since the relationship with Veldheim is disrupted. Various recent outbuildings have appeared at and on the grounds of the country house, which fall outside the protection. The remaining open space in front of and behind the main building is valuable. The old trees, such as the red beeches, acacias, summer oaks and chestnuts, are a remnant of the original layout and are therefore of importance.

Description

The COUNTRY HOUSE, located at some distance from and parallel to the Utrechtseweg, is constructed on a composite floor plan and consists of two storeys under a hipped roof covered with bituminous shingles. The roof planes are broken through by two types of roof dormers. The largest is provided with cheek walls. Both types have a tympanum above the windows and a gabled roof as covering. The tower on the front or south facade contains a third storey and has above an octagonal hipped roof a bell turret and a lantern with owl-shaped finial. The facades are built in English bond with natural stone accents around the windows. The large windows consist of casement windows with fanlights provided with glazing bars. The roof dormers are provided with pivoting windows, likewise with glazing bars. Originally all large windows were provided with venetian blinds.

The front facade or south facade on the Utrechtseweg is symmetrical in layout. On the central axis there is a projecting five-sided tower which is flanked by a landing that extends across the remaining facade width. The landing is three steps high, has a terrazzo floor and is covered by a balcony with wooden railings resting on Tuscan columns. The sides are screened with windscreens provided with glazing bars and glass. The facade contains on the first storey casement doors with five-light leaded glass fanlights. On the floor either side of the tower four windows are placed. The tower is on the ground floor provided with casement doors. In the sloping sides windows are found. The floors of the tower are separated by stringcourses. The windows on the third floor are provided with a natural stone surround. Each window surround is provided with a sculpted keystone in the form of a lion's head. Each roof plane of the tower has a roof dormer with tympanum. The open bell turret has in the breastwork cartouches and above which is an identical but smaller lantern with thereon an owl-shaped finial with pseudo roof dormers. The symmetrically arranged rear facade contains a central projection with hipped roof covering, of which the ridge height is lower than the ridge height of the main body. The tympanum of the roof dormer in the projection is here decorated with a sculpted cherub's head. In the projection is the main entrance, consisting of an entrance door in a portico, which rests on wooden Tuscan columns and is covered with a flattened small hipped roof, in front of which an arched tympanum is placed. Below the left window next to the entrance door is the foundation stone with the text: 'This stone was laid by E.A. Clotterbooke Patijn on the 22nd of August 1908'. In the first storey is a large three-part round-arched window with stained leaded glass. Similar windows are also found in the side facades of the projection. These are signed by atelier Van den Ham from Utrecht and dated 1909. The facades either side of the projection contain various types of windows with upper glazing bars and shutters. The narrower windows are barred. On the right of the facade is a round-arched door.

The right side facade contains a three-sided bay window with windows, two of which still have shutters. On the floor are four windows, three of which are bricked up and in front of which a later extension has been placed which falls outside the protection.

The left side facade contains on the right a five-sided projection over the full height which is covered by roof planes with unequal sides. A modern extension, which falls outside the protection, has been placed at the level of the basement storey. The floor plan layout is original. All original interior components fall under the protection, including the marble floors and timber panelling on the ground floor, the mouldings of walls and ceilings, the ornaments of the ceilings, the doors and ornamental work, the parquet floors in the former drawing room and the dining room as well as the fireplace in the dining room.

Moreover, the staircase is of value because of the leaded glass windows by atelier Van der Ham from Utrecht, the columns and the wooden staircase. Some leaded glass windows are executed as sash windows, while the original wooden sunscreens are also still present. In the former study is in a fanlight a stained leaded glass window, which in sepia depicts the old house Veldheim. The study is the only room executed in mahogany.

Valuation

The country house of the country estate Veldheim is of cultural-historical value as an exceptional example of a more recent country estate, part of the Stichtse Lustwarande. The building is of architectural-historical importance because of its building style and ornamental work and because of its place in the oeuvre of architect Jan Stuivinga.
