Omschrijving

Description
Description
PARK LAYOUT, consisting of a. carriage drive b. park area around the castle c. park area with long pond d. French garden e. kitchen garden f. meadows. re a.: the carriage drive is the extension of the Kasteelstraat and continues in a south-easterly direction where it ends at the road along the Lateraal canal; formerly, before the canal was dug, the drive came via a gentle curve onto the Rijksweg. The drive has a rubble surface and is flanked on both sides by a single row of old oak trees; at the canal end of the drive there are no trees. The course of the drive is 18th century or older.
At the level of the access dam to the castle, trees are absent and the surface broadens into a sort of loosely-formed forecourt, to which adjoin: the two gates (see 7) to the park and the kitchen garden, the French garden and some outbuildings (see 3). re b.: the park area around the castle lies in the -nowadays- dry bed of the castle moat; the north-western section of the moat carried water at the beginning of the 20th century, certainly in winter; in this part still the remains of two brick bridge abutments; furthermore an ice-house (18th/19th century) in the corner of the curtain wall and one of the buttresses; brick, forms a structural component of the wall. The connection (across the dry moat) between the Kasteelstraat and the castle is formed by a broad rising earth dam; formerly (until the beginning of 19th century?) a bridge lay here. From the dam a path runs all the way around the castle through the old bed. re c.: this park section adjoins the north side directly to the aforementioned section and is divided lengthwise into two approximately equal sections by a long narrow pond, a hollow which may be related to the former winter bed of the Maas. There are remains of a willow-wattle revetment. The layout probably dates from the second half of the 19th century, with the southern section being the most recent. From the castle there is a view over the pond to Roermond. Via semi-surfaced paths various walks are possible; over the pond lie two bridges (see under 4). Given the presence of some solitary trees in certain places the park was formerly more open in structure. The park is separated from the carriage drive by a wall and a low beech hedge in its extension. re d.: French garden, early 20th century; simple geometric layout on the north side of the Kasteelstraat opposite the dam: lawn with urn (see component 8), around which a wide border with among other things roses and flowering shrubs. re e.: the kitchen garden lies behind the large barns (see 3), i.e. on the east side thereof; access is via a gate (see 7) next to the coach-house; the kitchen garden is partly surrounded by walls (see 6), partly disappeared or collapsed. Between the kitchen garden and carriage drive a low beech hedge, which adjoins the access gate. Furthermore the remains of a grape-house, mid 19th century: iron skeleton on brick breast wall, in which at regular intervals hardstone projecting octagonal pilasters serve as a base for cast-iron half-round pilasters with Corinthian capitals; these support the roof skeleton. re f.: the meadows (some formerly partly orchard) form the remainder of the complex; do not strictly belong to the park layout, but are nonetheless worthy of protection as a landscape-visual buffer.
Valuation
PARK LAYOUT of general importance - because of the age of -in particular- the drive - because of the cultural-historical value in itself and in relation to the other complex components - because of the visual-landscape value
