Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2:
PARKAANLEG, bestaande uit a. oprijlaan; b. park; c. voorplein; d. boerderijerf; e. weilanden.
Waardering
PARKAANLEG is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege de ouderdom;
- als relatief gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een eenvoudige 19de-eeuwse aanleg rondom een kleinschalig Limburgs kasteelcomplex;
- vanwege de ensemblewaarde.

Description
Description of component 2:
PARK LAYOUT, consisting of a. drive; b. park; c. forecourt; d. farmyard; e. meadows.
Ad a.: The drive, presumed to have been laid out in the last quarter of the 19th century, begins at the northern edge of the village and runs in a north-easterly direction towards the castle; the planting consists of old lime trees; beneath them hawthorn hedges. At the end the drive makes a gentle bend, where a small path (without planting) branches off towards the outbuildings. The drive ends at the point where formerly a bridge over the Selzerbeek to Germany stood; approximately halfway between this point and the aforementioned bend begins the short path over the bridge to the access gate to the forecourt. Ad b.: The actual park in landscape style, 19th century, is very modest in size and layout; it comprises no more than the small grass area directly around the house and the strip of grassland (the width varies from approximately 25m. to 50m.) between the two streams and the moat; it projects as it were parallel to the moat around the buildings; there stand fine old solitary trees, including four horse chestnuts in a row and many conifers. Directly on the east side of the house stands on the moat bank a group of old trimmed hornbeams, planted in a circle (early 19th century?). Ad c.: The area of the forecourt also includes the terrain to the south of the garden wall directly adjacent to the east gable of the outbuilding; this is the site of the former kitchen garden; at present (spring 1997) a new geometric garden with a pergola is being created; its layout naturally falls outside the protection. The actual forecourt lies directly next to the new garden between castle and access gate; its layout is likewise new; there stands among other things an impressive old red beech. Ad d.: The farmyard (part of the large outbuilding and no longer in use as such) consists of two parts, namely the terrain between the garden wall and the north wing of the outbuilding and the terrain to the west of the building. The first-mentioned part is no longer used; its layout is at present not determinable due to wild growth of grass and weeds; it is highly probable that the manure heap was formerly here; on the east side this yard borders via a retaining wall on the indentation of the moat directly west of the castle; the wall has only buttresses and an inlet opening via a ramp. The other part of the yard is, as already mentioned above, divided and arranged as small gardens by the residents/users of the outbuilding. Ad e.: The meadows lie on either side of the drive; in the western meadow stand some fruit trees; it is probable that this meadow was formerly an orchard.
Valuation
PARK LAYOUT is of general interest:
- on account of its age;
- as a relatively well-preserved example of a simple 19th-century layout around a small-scale Limburgian castle complex;
- on account of its ensemble value.
