Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
PARSONAGE, belonging to the R.K. Church of Saint John the Baptist already protected at national level and forming part of the church complex of the same name. The parsonage was built several years after the completion of the church around 1865 in a fairly austere Neo-Gothic style by J.J.W. van Leeuwen.
Due to its location against the dike slope there was room for a relatively large basement, which around 1915 was extended at the rear with a conservatory. The original layout of the building has been largely preserved and features on the rear side among other things a parson's room executed with rich stucco work. The church is connected to the parsonage on the south side by an elongated wooden link, which is of secondary importance for the protection.
Description
A rectangular symmetrically arranged building mass built against a dike slope, which appears two storeys high on the front but has a basement as an extra storey on the rear. The whole is covered by a hipped roof with diminished improved Dutch tiles and chimneys on both ridge ends.
The facades are built of grey brick in English bond with fine pointing and segmental arches above the doors, windows and spandrels. In most of these arches yellow brick is applied decoratively as ornamental blocks. Yellow brick also appears in the herringbone frieze that finishes the facades all around. The ground floor and first floor are separated from each other by a brick course with a toothed pattern. This also applies to the plinth of the front facade, which projects under a roll moulding and runs across the remaining facades. The window sills are rendered, partly also of hardstone. The continuous, profiled, slightly projecting wooden gutter rests on gutter brackets with diamond head motif. The windows are predominantly six- and four-pane sash windows with slightly arched fanlights.
The front facade (west) is five window units wide and has in the centre the main entrance, consisting of a panel door in neo-gothic style with three- and four-pointed arch motifs under a two-pane fanlight.
The left side facade (south) is three window units wide, three storeys high and is bounded on the left by a rendered buttress wall capped with a roll moulding. The facade of the lowest storey (basement) has from left to right a segmental arch-shaped spandrel with a small window with anti-theft bars in the upper part, a four-pane panel door and two simplified segmental arch-shaped windows. The second storey has a window on the left and to its right two spandrels, while at the third storey one window in the centre is flanked by spandrels.
Of the rear facade (east) three window units wide, the lowest storey is extended over the full facade width with a rectangular conservatory, built up from a continuous series of windows and two doors under a flat roof. Above the rendered plinth the facades are built of grey brick (one-half brick thick). The window sills are of orange glazed drainage tiles. The two storeys of the main mass above each have three windows, those of the second storey distinguished by the neo-gothic tracery of the fanlights. Behind this lies the parson's room.
At the left side facade (north) the fanlight of the door to the wooden link is visible at the lowest storey. At the location of the staircase on the first floor a sash window is placed under a roll moulding.
The interior layout is largely in its original state and contains among other things in the parson's room a stucco ceiling with bundle moulding and a black marble fireplace mantelpiece with stucco pilasters above it.
Evaluation
The parsonage, forming part of the church complex of Saint John the Baptist, is of general cultural-historical significance as a representative example of a building from the boom in Catholic Neo-Gothic religious construction after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853.
The parsonage is of general architectural-historical significance because of the neo-gothic building style from the third quarter of the 19th century, an important movement in the development of Roman Catholic architecture. The parsonage is reasonably intact in main form, material use and detailing, both externally and internally.
The parsonage possesses high ensemble value through the mutual spatial and functional coherence with the other complex components which is image-defining and situated outside the built-up area of Leimuiden on the higher lying upland in a further open and wide polder landscape.
