Omschrijving

Description

The MANSION is constructed on an almost rectangular floor plan over a basement and three storeys. The left (E) part of the house is still two storeys high. The front part of the house is covered by a composite (truncated) hipped roof with grey Dutch tiles and an overhanging cornice, the rear part by a flat roof. In 1902 the house was extended with a second storey on the right-hand side (W), as a result of which the front facade is no longer symmetrical. Moreover, the bent marquee roofs on the central risalite and the corner towers were replaced by a hipped roof and dome roofs respectively. The basement is constructed above a plinth in red facing brick. Above this the facades are built in red brick. In the front facade the plinth is made of hard stone, in the side facades and rear facade the plinth is plastered. The front facade and the first window bays of the side facades are richly decorated, the rest of the building is simply executed. The windows with fanlights are placed beneath round arches and basket-handle arches. The basement windows are arched.

The front facade (N) consists of a central entrance risalite with a window bay on either side and an obliquely placed corner pavilion beneath a dome roof with tiles in Rhenish bond. The front facade is embellished with speckled courses and blocks, columns, pediments, reliefs, pilasters and various ornaments in sandstone. Friezes with decorative brickwork in yellow and red facing brick have also been applied.

The risalite is constructed over three storeys. The entrance is set in a sandstone frame with, amongst other elements, half-columns, a frieze and a pediment on a fantastical list between obelisks. The entrance is flanked by side lights, of which the original stained glass is still present in the right one. On the storey a tripartite light with shell decoration provides light to the staircase. Above this a straight-headed window is placed between four columns. The risalite is closed off by a roof dormer with pediment and obelisks.

Round the three-sided pavilions on the first storey a balcony with sandstone balustrade on consoles is attached. On the dome roofs small dormers are placed. The right pavilion and the window bay to the left of it are three storeys high, the left pavilion and the window bay to the right of it retain the original height of two storeys. In the roof plane next to the pavilion a roof dormer beneath a pediment.

The side facades and rear facade are provided with plastered decorative bands, corner blocks and quoins. The decorative bands are applied at the height of the arch springing points. The facades comprise three window bays. In the rear facade the middle window bay projects strongly in relation to the two outer ones. The corner to the left of the risalite is filled with an extension of one storey with a terrace above it. The conservatory at the rear has disappeared.

In the house the hall with the staircase is still largely in its original state. It is plastered with faux jointing and the walls are articulated by, amongst other elements, (Ionic) columns, pilasters, casements, stained glass windows, a tiled floor, wooden stair railings and posts and doors with etched glass. Cassettes in the slopes beneath the staircase and the small ceilings. The large stuccoed ceiling in the stairwell is constructed from different layers with cassettes, rosettes and consoles.

Valuation

The mansion is of general architectural-historical and urban design importance:

- on account of the Neo-Dutch Renaissance building style

- on account of the rich and distinctive ornamentation in the facades and the hall

- as a mansion in the then expansion of Zwolle in the green area between station and city

- on account of the prominent location on the ringway within the protected townscape of Zwolle

- on account of the integrity of the exterior and the hall
