Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Sassenpoortenbrug is a fixed BRIDGE over the Stadsgracht, which together with the medieval Sassenpoort forms the access to the old inner city. The bridge replaced in 1909 the drawbridge from 1861. The then city architect ir. L. Krook designed the bridge in a Transitional style with elements from Rationalism and Art Nouveau. It is an early example of a fixed bridge executed in reinforced concrete. The concrete vault is reinforced according to the Monier system (with round rods of concrete steel). The vault and the foundation blocks were probably designed by the Amsterdamsche Fabriek van Cement-Ijzerwerken 'Wittenburg', which carried out the concrete work as subcontractor. The contractor for the entire work was H. Danser from Meppel.
Description
The bridge with two lanes and two pavements is a reinforced concrete construction, clad with red brick and grey granite. The span has the form of a segmental arch. The supporting structure of reinforced concrete is clamped between two heavy foundation blocks of unreinforced concrete. The top of the bridge is closed off by a balustrade, which also continues over the abutments which are placed at an angle or in a curve to form the connection with the banks. The spandrels, balusters and abutments are laid in red brick. The coping of the segmental arches, and horizontal mouldings and elements are executed in granite.
In the keystones of both segmental arch-shaped passages the year 1909, above it the coat of arms of Zwolle. On the balustrades stand bronze lanterns with curved glazing on pedestals of polished granite.
Significance
The Sassenpoortenbrug is of general architectural-historical and urban design importance:
- because of the Transitional style with elements from Rationalism and Art Nouveau
- because of its prominent location over the city canal, in line with the medieval Sassenpoort and within the protected townscape of Zwolle
- because of the integrity of the bridge, lanterns and abutments
- as an early example of the application of concrete construction for a city bridge.
