Onderdeel 1:
Omschrijving

Description
Component 1:
Description
The PARK of the country estate Dennenburg is situated on two adjacent plots, based on the medieval cope reclamation from the twelfth century. In the park a number of components or compartments can be distinguished, the character of which is determined by structures stemming from different developmental stages. For the whole it applies that the original reclamation structure, determined by the ditch pattern, is still present. The northern plot is characterized by a three-part division with the house centrally located between a large, tree-bordered meadow on the Engweg side, and a second bordered meadow, which is cut through by a narrow (partly dried-out) ditch. The immediate surroundings of the house, on the middle compartment, are characterized by a small landscaped garden from 1815 on the rear side, a vegetable garden with orangery to the southwest of this, and a section without clear design structure just to the northwest of the house where a farmhouse and a carriage house are located. Directly in front of the house is a gravel path and a lawn. A sight line has been projected on both the front and rear sides of the house.
The southeastern plot, originally a meadow, was partly transformed after the construction of the country house in 1728 into a star wood at the level of the country house and an orchard to the south of this. The drive, which divides the total property into two halves, was furnished with a double row of trees (oaks and beeches).
In 1815 a large part of the park underwent a metamorphosis into a landscape style. According to the design of the Utrecht garden architect Christiaan George Breitensteyn a landscaped park was created, with the compartment division respected. Breitensteyn's design included among other things a circular walk along the boundaries of the property, where sight lines and rest areas were realized in various places. Furthermore the rear part of the southeastern was transformed into a small landscape park with a winding pond and various native and foreign tree species and shrubs such as beeches, maples, American oaks, cedars and rhododendrons. The orchard remained partly intact. The compartment to the north of the star wood also received landscaping in which a small kidney-shaped pond was dug, around which winding paths with viewpoints were realized. Both landscaped parts are uneven. At the same time some, not further specified modifications to the garden around the house were carried out. As far as is known the park has not been altered since 1905. The current park is in poor condition for much of its area and has particularly declined significantly over the last decades. The drop in groundwater level has particularly affected the beech trees on the site. As a result the star wood is barely recognizable as such anymore. Also the deferred maintenance has caused much wild growth whereby the design structure is considerably obscured in many cases. Nevertheless the park offers sufficient elements of high quality for protection to be considered appropriate. The area around the house is, in contrast to the parts mentioned above, well maintained. The garden on the rear side of the country house is designed in landscape style, with an important sight line running through it. The lawn is bordered by shrubs and trees which enhances the depth effect. The placement of solitary trees and/or shrubs in the lawn, including an impressive weeping beech at the back of the grass area, give the impression of a coulisse landscape.
Valuation
The park of the country estate Dennenburg is of great cultural-historical value because of its long development history, beginning with the medieval reclamation through to the last, nineteenth-century landscape changes, each of which has added its own character to the area. The park is also of garden architectural-historical value as an example of two characteristic garden styles, manifested in the star wood as an exponent of formal layout and the landscape elements as an example of an early nineteenth-century landscape style. Furthermore of ensemble value in relation to the country house and the surrounding area, whereby the extension of the drive, now known as the Hogesteeg, originally formed part of the aforementioned drive.
