Inleiding

Introduction

PUMP STATION in traditional historicising style, 1915, built on commission of the Waterleiding Maatschappij Limburg, to a design by architect Jos. Wielders of Sittard. The pump station is freely situated at the intersection of the Sittard-Maastricht railway line and the Bergerweg. The pump station was extended on the south side in 1938 according to a design by G. Cuijpers of the Gemeentewerken Sittard. This extension includes a ventilation chamber, an overflow reservoir and a water storage reservoir. Both reservoirs were constructed separately from each other in an earthen embankment. The ventilation chamber is located in the extension on the embankment behind the original pump station. The nearby high-voltage building is EXCLUDED from protection.

Description

Water pump station on a square PLAN, extended on the south side with a narrower extension on an earthen embankment extending in a southerly direction, containing an overflow reservoir and a water storage reservoir.

The pump station has basement rooms at two levels below ground level. From the basement at the deepest level the spring chamber with shaft is accessible. This shaft reaches ground level on the west side of the pump station and has a shaft cover. Above ground level the building has one STOREY with an attic floor. This whole is covered by a HIPPED ROOF, with recessed gable on the north side. The extension on the earthen embankment on the south side has a recessed hipped roof. Both roofs are covered with blue Tuiles-du-Nord tiles and have zinc-clad ventilation lanterns and ridge cresting. Gutter brackets on wooden consoles. The pump station is constructed in red brick on a tufa frame with a rollcourse and laid in English bond. Rendered door lintels, window lintels, cross windows, cornice and covering of the buttresses. Beneath the earthen embankment a fully reinforced concrete overflow and water storage reservoir. The pump station has a symmetrically planned FRONT FACADE on the north side, dominated by a projecting central section with an in-and-out sweeping stepped gable. In this risalit is a round-arched wooden door with butt hinges, as well as an oeil-de-boeuf window. Both window and door are placed in a white-rendered frame, with the door lintel provided with a keystone bearing the inscription "Anno 1915". Above the door a drip moulding plus a frame moulding, on which the inscription "Gemeentelijke drinkwaterleiding" was originally displayed. The stepped gable has a white-rendered covering and step-like projecting shoulder pieces. In both short sides of this central risalit a rectangular window in a white-rendered frame. On either side of the central risalit a rectangular, white-rendered window frame with horizontal glazing bars. On the gable corners double buttresses with white-rendered covering.

The eastern and western SIDE FACADES are identical: both have three white-rendered square cross windows, without the original red-and-white shutters, of which only the hinges remain. All windows, including the oeil-de-boeuf window, in the building volume dating from 1915 were originally provided with leaded glass.

On the south side, on the embankment, is the EXTENSION WITH THE WATER STORAGE RESERVOIRS. The extension is blind on the south side, in the west and east facades provided with rectangular window frames with small glazing bars. On the gable corners of the building volume from 1915 the buttresses have been replaced by sheet pile walls, with a rollcourse as capping, behind which the earthen embankment. On the embankment are located the three access hatches of the water storage reservoir.

The pump installations have been largely renewed. Steel construction floor with corrugated sheet steel in the lower pump chamber, according to a construction calculation by Rörink & Van den Broek of Enschede. Construction of the air shaft above the spring according to a calculation by Ingenieursbureau Batavum of The Hague.

In the INTERIOR the spring chamber with shaft, the stairwell to the lower pump chamber and the spring chamber, the sample/laboratory room and the upper pump chamber are important. Various rooms have red-and-black tile floors, green or red-yellow-blue tile wainscoting. In the hall four panelled doors in frames with butt hinges. Corridor and stairwell arches in the same in-and-out sweeping form as the stepped gable above the main entrance.

Valuation

The pump station is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a technical and typological development with an at that time innovative character.

The architectural-historical values are determined by the traditional, historicising building style, the material use and ornamental work, the aesthetic qualities of the design and by the particular coherence between exterior and interior. The pump station is an early design by Sittard architect Jos. Wielders and is important for his oeuvre.

The pump station is because of its location connected with the development and extension of the city, of particular significance for the appearance of Sittard and possesses a historical-spatial relationship with the spring present there.

The pump station has remained architecturally intact and is important in relation to the visual integrity of the surroundings. Moreover, the building is important because of its rarity from a supra-regional architectural, building technical, typological and functional perspective, in combination with its relative age. On the basis of the above properties and characteristics the object represents a matter of general importance.
