Inleiding

TEKENSCHOOL in traditioneel-ambachtelijke stijl, 1907.

In elke as drie gekoppelde, segmentboogvormige houten vensters met horizontale indeling.

Introduction

DRAWING SCHOOL in traditional-craft style, 1907. The design shows strong influences from the Roermond drawing school. The school was remodelled in 1967, 1970 and 1972 and among other things served as a student social centre. In the process, much of the original interior was lost.

EXCLUDED from protection are the dwelling built against the northern wing, as well as all other annexes and outbuildings not belonging to the building volume of 1907.

Description

Drawing school with basement storey and two STOREYS on a floor plan that is basically E-shaped. Situated in the linear development of Rijksweg Zuid, lengthwise in relation to the street. The whole is covered by a flattened, broken roof truss with hip tiles. Four roof dormers with slate in Maas covering and blinded rectangular wooden six-light cross windows.

The school is built of brick, laid in bond, on a profiled natural stone plinth with basement windows and sandstone profile moulding. Sandstone. Hard stone. Anchors.

Completely symmetrical FRONT FACADE, dominated by a central projection with pediment and two projecting side wings, in which the stairwells are housed. The bays are separated from one another by pilasters, which are connected under the eaves by round-arched friezes on sandstone corbels. Under the eaves a moulding with block dentil decoration. On the pilasters four ornamental wall anchors, together forming the date of construction 1907. In the central projection, ending in a projecting pediment with hard stone coping, the rectangular double wooden door with fittings is placed in a stepped stone round-arched moulding. Above it a round-arched, double vertically divided fanlight. The door is reached via two hard stone steps. Above the door moulding, in sandstone relief, the inscription 'TEEKENSCHOOL' and a series of five segmental-arched blind niches. The niche in the middle has a blinded window. The pediment projects on sandstone corbels. In the pediment a triangular sandstone relief with the thirteenth-century Sittard city seal, depicting St. Peter with the keys of the kingdom of heaven in his right hand, the book in his left hand. In the central panel the vault of heaven or the city wall with arch is symbolised, on which two towers rest, beneath it the split curl cross that also appears in the city coat of arms. Along the sides of the triangular relief the text 'INGENIUM SUPERAT VIRES'.

The façade fields on either side each have two window axes. In each axis three coupled, segmental-arched wooden windows with horizontal glazing. These windows are placed in a segmental-arched moulding, provided with chamfered brick window sills with hard stone margins. Basement hatches under the windows of the outer axes.

The spout gables of the side wings, with hard stone coping, each have a round-arched window moulding spanning two storeys. The windows of both side wings vary in size. On the first storey, three coupled and horizontally glazed segmental-arched three-light windows. On the second storey three coupled, varying in height round-arched windows. Flush bands on corbels. The side elevation of the southern wing has in each storey three steel, stepped round-arched windows. The side elevation of the northern wing has on the first storey two coupled, horizontally glazed wooden segmental-arched windows in a segmental-arched window moulding. On the façade are diamond-shaped sandstone reliefs, in which the symbolic representation of the various trades. Two reliefs were renewed in 1978, the old ones had to be removed due to the installation of ventilation grilles. Furthermore, a gable stone with inscription: A.M.D.C. 1907 7 May.

The INTERIOR layout of the school has been largely altered.

Valuation

The Sittard drawing school is of cultural-historical value as a special expression of a cultural, socio-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the high-quality aesthetic qualities, the region-bound use of materials and the ornamental features referring to the original function. The drawing school, due to its location, is strongly connected with the development and expansion of Sittard in the first half of the twentieth century and is of particular significance for the appearance of the city. The building has, as regards the exterior, a reasonable degree of architectural integrity. It is also important for the visual integrity of the built environment. Moreover, the school has, viewed in a regional context, a high degree of architectural-historical rarity and a reasonable degree of typological and functional rarity.

The Sittard drawing school represents a general interest because of the entire set of aforementioned values.
