Inleiding
Stuurman.

Description
Introduction
The youngest WATER TOWER in the Krimpenerwaard was completed together with its associated service dwelling in 1937 according to a design by architect P.D. Stuurman from Waddinxveen. In that same year the drinking water pipeline for the municipalities of Ammerstol, Stolwijk, Vlist and Berkenwoude was completed, making this area one of the last regions in the Netherlands to be connected to the water mains network. The water tower "De Vijf Gemeenten" measures 45 metres and is built in Business Expressionistic style on a grass-covered embankment. The filter building and the bridge with lanterns at the entrance to the site are later additions built around 1960, designed by the same architect.
N.B. The service dwelling is of subordinate importance for protection. The installation at the bottom of the water tower was replaced in 1963.
Description
The water tower is constructed with a reinforced concrete skeleton clad in red brick and has a helmet roof covered with copper plates. The tower consists of a square shaft with four storeys on which the circular reservoir is placed, covered at top and bottom by a white-painted concrete disc. The reservoir is supported by projecting white-painted concrete beams. The middle of each wall face of the shaft has a buttress, transitioning on the storey level into a pilaster. On either side of the buttress are steel four-pane windows under continuous white concrete lintels; just above ground level two four-pane windows are also placed. Along both sides of the pilasters are narrow strips with steel windows. The corners of the shaft are reinforced at the base with approximately 2-metre-high wall sections. The entrance on the east side of the tower consists of a rubble arch topped with a white concrete block. The simple door with a round window is accessible via a rubble staircase whose steps are covered with yellow tiles. In the north and south facades lower entrances are placed with a rectangular-topped door accessible via a passage with brick walls in the embankment on which the tower is situated.
The interior of the tower has been largely modernised, but the tile panel with blue border and orange accents in the stairwell to the first floor has been retained. On the first floor a copper plate has been mounted in commemoration of the establishment of the drinking water pipeline "De Vijf Gemeenten" 12 October 1934. The concrete flat-bottomed reservoir has a capacity of 360 m³ and is covered by an aluminium hood.
Valuation
The water tower is of general cultural-historical importance as a symbol of the drinking water supply in the Netherlands and as one of the last water towers built in the Krimpenerwaard.
The water tower is of general architectural-historical importance because of its striking design in Business Expressionistic style, a characteristic movement in recent Dutch architecture, and as a fine example of a design from the oeuvre of architect P.D. Stuurman. The water tower is intact in main form, detailing and material use.
The water tower has great landscape value as an orientation point in the wider surroundings.
