Inleiding

Tepe in Neo-Gotische stijl.

INTERIEUR is gewijzigd.

Waardering

Introduction

SCHOOL BUILDING belonging to the Roman Catholic Sint Bonifatiuskerk, named Sint Ludgerus, built in 1873 to a design by architect W.V.A. Tepe in Neo-Gothic style. In 1879 the primary school at the front (north side) was extended with a society building and service dwelling, also designed by Tepe. In 1921 the school section at the rear was subsequently extended with two classrooms. H. Havinga drew up the plans for this. After the Second World War, in 1950 the entire building was renovated by architect W. Reitsema from Leens. The section between school and society, which formerly presumably consisted of an enclosed courtyard and washhouse, was renovated and the residential section was brought together with the society space. In 1989 finally, work began on the conversion of the school and society building into a dwelling house with studio and exhibition space. The interior is no longer original as a result of this conversion and therefore falls outside the protection.

W.V.A. Tepe is particularly known for his many Roman Catholic churches in neo-gothic style. He began his career, however, by building schools. Of his early schools, most of which have disappeared, there presumably still exist four, including the Sint Ludgerusschool in Wehe-den Hoorn.

Description

One storey high SCHOOL BUILDING from 1873 in Neo-Gothic style built in brown brick; render frame projects slightly forward; in gables bands of decorative brickwork. All gable ends have in the centre a pilaster that runs through the gable top; sloped gable sections are terminated by a saddle-back ridge. Building is covered by a composite gabled roof; the front and middle sections have glazed blue flat Frisian pantile; the rear section has new tiles; three brick chimneys on the ridge. Front and middle sections have a wooden gutter placed on the edge of recessed brick; rear section has a gutter on brackets. Windows in front and middle sections are terminated by a segmental arch with decorative brickwork in the arch soffit and have brick sills.

Front section, dating from 1879, has a transversely-placed gabled roof with on the north side a projection, in which a porch was situated. Projection has a gable with ears and in the gable end a central pilaster. To the right of central pilaster a front door with two-part fanlight terminated by segmental arch and a non-original step; to the left a window from 1950 (originally a door); in gable end two narrow vertical windows. On either side of the projected porch two six-pane windows. On corners and between windows brick "buttresses". Side gables of front section have projecting courses and in the centre of the gable a brick buttress; two six-pane windows; in gable end two four-pane windows.

Middle section, dating from 1873, has a transversely-placed gabled roof. Both gable ends, on east and west sides, have on corners and in the centre a brick buttress; two large windows terminated by segmental arch. Windows on east side have new frames and glazing bars. Northern window on west side is a double six-pane window; southern window is partly bricked up.

Section between front and middle section has a flat roof. Intermediate section has on west side three six-pane windows and on east side a non-original door and window.

Rear section, dating from 1921, has two lengthways-placed gabled roofs that lean onto the transversely-placed gabled roof of the middle section. At the rear, south side, two gable ends. Eastern gable end has in the centre a buttress; western gable end is crowned by a vertical brick element. On corners brick buttresses. Both gable ends have two large windows with presumably new frames and glazing bars terminated by a roll moulding. Western gable end has three small vertical windows terminated by a round arch with decorative brickwork in the arch soffit; eastern gable end has two windows with round arch. West gable of rear section has a door with a large fanlight (both non-original). East gable has a composite window terminated by a round arch with brickwork in the arch soffit and entrance section from 1950. INTERIOR is altered.

Valuation

Roman Catholic school and society building of general cultural and architectural-historical importance:

- as an example of a Roman Catholic village school and society building from the second half of the 19th century in the province of Groningen

- as a representative of one of the few early school buildings by architect W.V.A. Tepe

- because of the fairly high degree of integrity of the exterior

- because of the functional and spatial-visual relationship with the other components of the complex

- because of the prominent location in the middle of the village
