Omschrijving

- als onderdeel van het eerste en enige Cisterciënzerklooster dat boven de grote rivieren gesitueerd is;

- vanwege de typologie;

Description

On the south side of the complex the GATEHOUSE annex GUEST ACCOMMODATION with CHAPEL, GRAPERY AND GUEST GARDEN. The gatehouse is an elongated L-shaped building with a rendered plinth, built in red machine-made brick under gabled roofs covered with tiles (Dutch bond). Below the eaves a frieze of decorative masonry is applied. The front facade (S) consists of three parts: in the middle the slightly recessed gateway, to the right a three-bay-wide building section and to the left a rectangular building section, in which the chapel is housed. The building volume at right angles to the chapel is used as guest accommodation.

The centrally-located passage is placed between pilasters under a small pitched roof with weathervane. The double carriage doors with hardware are located below an iron lintel and within pointed-arch-shaped archivolts. Above the door an image of the archangel Michael with the dragon, coats of arms and a Latin motto. On either side of the entrance a window with eight-pane fanlight under a pointed arch spandrel. The projecting building sections under continuous roof skirts on either side of the gateway form the transition to the adjacent building volumes. In the right risalit is a window with eight-pane fanlight placed, in the left a rectangular window with stained glass filling. The right building section consists of two projecting building sections under curved pitched roofs. On the ground floor in each risalit is a three-light window placed under a masonry segmental arch, on the upper storey are two small windows. Between both risalits a building section with a raised centre bay, likewise under a curved pitched roof. In it is the entrance placed in a segmental-arch-shaped portico, above it two small windows. On either side of the entrance a two-light window under a masonry segmental arch. The six-bay-wide chapel to the left of the gateway is subdivided by means of pilasters. In five bays a rectangular window with stained glass is placed, the last bay has a modern extension. On the roof two roof dormers.

The rear facade of the gatehouse (N) has on either side of the pointed-arch-shaped opening several raised-level entrances with natural stone steps and T-windows. The rear facade of the right part of the gatehouse and the chapel are virtually identical to the front facade. The guest accommodation at right angles to the chapel is connected to it by an intermediate section. It is a two-storey rectangular building built in red machine-made brick with red decorative bands under a slate-covered gabled roof. The windows in the facades have in some parts lost their glazing bars.

The GRAPERY forms a connecting section between the guest accommodation and the southern service rooms of the monastery complex. This passage has no independent entrance. It is a single-storey building with a glass roof. The grapes planted on the outside grow via recesses in the wall on the inside of the passage. This is a common method of planting in grape houses, but in the execution of a grapery rare.

The GUEST GARDEN is of spatial and functional importance respectively as a green, open space and as an element in the totality of the manner in which the monastery functions.

Valuation

Gatehouse with chapel, guest accommodation, grapery and guest garden is of general cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning importance:

- as a component of the first and only Cistercian monastery situated above the major rivers;

- owing to the typology;

- owing to the reasonably intact state in which the building is found.
