The register's description

Introduction This townhouse built in 1888 in the style of Dutch Neo-renaissance is one of the most representative residential buildings on the Kornputsingel, whose even side was built on the former city walls, demolished in the seventies of the 19th century. The rear of the house borders the old city moat and the park of the villa Rams Woerthe. It was among others the residence of the philosopher, professor and freethinker Leo Polak (1880-1941).

Description

It is a townhouse with basement and first floor under a mansard roof covered with bulet tiles with flat upper roof slope. The asymmetrical facade is three bays wide and provided with a plastered plinth and joints of lime-sandstone. The entrance is located in the slightly recessed left bay with entablature and still has the original double door with wrought-iron frame irons and fanlight, which is placed between pilasters with diamond heads and acanthus leaf on hard stone piers. The pilasters support the consoles with mascarons and guttae, which carry a no longer original balcony, onto which the balcony doors open. The slightly projecting, two-bay-wide right part with neck gable has on the ground floor windows under a segmental arch with keystone and brick mosaic-filled arch drums, between rustication-accented corner listel. In the broad plinth band are two stucco panels with portraits under a drapery. In the plinth also lie the connection pieces of the fluted storey listel. Between these are T-windows with closing and connection stones with diamond heads and filling of brick mosaics in the rounded arch drums. Between the windows is a wrought-iron ornamental wall anchor placed. The gable top is formed by a neck gable top functioning as a roof dormer with among other things decorated claw pieces, corner pinnacles (-obelisks), cornice, medallion with cat's head and a pediment with bulbous crown. The interior is still partly in original condition with panelled doors within mouldings and ceilings with the original stucco reliefs. In the hallway the draught vestibule has been broken through, but the stucco decorations on the ceiling and the staircase with the monumental staircase newel have been preserved. The suite is provided with window sills and interior shutters. In both rooms the fireplace has a large marble mantelpiece. In the front room the door to the hallway is crowned with a cornice. The back room has double sliding doors to the conservatory with a veranda to its left. In the kitchen the floor and walls are tiled and the large fireplace and the wooden kitchen cupboard are also part of the original construction. In the stairwell with rounded arch passage are two cast-iron grill windows. One of the bedrooms has a door with etched glass, on which the name J.J.B.J. Bouvy Dord(t) and the year 1888 are noted. The toilet and kitchen on the first floor also still have the original fittings. The roof truss is composed of rafters with diagonal roof timbers drawn from the centre studs to the corner gutter and collar ties. In the basement is among other things a wine cellar.

Valuation

The monumental building is one of the finest and best preserved components of a predominantly late-19th-century facade wall. The fairly intact building with a front facade in neo-renaissance style is an indispensable element in an urban development respect very valuable larger whole. It therefore has great urban development, architectural-historical and ensemble value.
