The register's description

Inleiding

In 1859 met de lange westzijde op het IJ georiënteerd CAFE-RESTAURANT, genaamd "'t Tolhuis" en gebouwd naar eclectisch ontwerp van de stadsarchitect W. Springer. Aannemer was M. Lucassen uit Lent.

NB. Het ontwerp van het destijds bijbehorende plantsoen werd geleverd door stadsingenieur P. van der Sterr. Als onderdeel van een uitspanning op de plaats van een in 1665 gebouwd tolhuis. Het oorspronkelijke gebouw had op de begane grond naast een vestibule en buffet een tweetal zalen. In 1878 werden op het omliggende terrein een speeltuin, muziektent en handboogbanen toegevoegd. In 1913 werd op deze plaats de ENTOS gehouden, de Eerste Nederlandse Tentoonstelling op Scheepvaartgebied, waarbij het café uit 1859 gespaard bleef. In 1919 werd de tolhuistuin opgehoogd en gewijzigd. Ook werd in 1919 door de dienst PW van de gemeente Amsterdam een plan ontwikkeld voor het inrichten van het 'Oude Tolhuis aan de Buiksloterweg' tot Volkskoffiehuis. Aan de NO-zijde werd een spoelruimte toegevoegd. Recent zijn twee overdekte terrassen bijgebouwd. Deze vallen buiten de bescherming.

Omschrijving

Op een in oorsprong T-vormig grondplan in gele baksteen met één en twee bouwlagen onder samenstel van flauwhellende pannen schild- en zadeldaken met grote overstek en gesneden daklijsten opgetrokken café-restaurant. Het NZ gerichte dwarsgeplaatste hoofdvolume heeft twee verdiepingen, het één-laags WO-volume telt vijf traveeën en bevat een aangebouwd entreeportaal aan de korte zuidzijde, met links een één smalle vensteras brede aanbouw en rechts een drie vensterassen brede aanbouw, beide voorzien van plint en geprofileerde gootlijst. Het entreeportaal heeft een zadeldak met brede overstek op gesneden consoles en is bij de uiteinden voorzien van in dezelfde trant gesneden windveren. Toegangspartij met dubbele beglaasde paneeldeur. Boven het kalf een halfrond bovenlicht met sterbloemvormige tracering in een breed geprofileerd houten kozijn. De W-gevel heeft een gepleisterde plint en een vijftal dubbele zesruits beglaasde paneeldeuren met boven het kalf een halfrond bovenlicht met verticale roede. Eenvoudige omlopende bakstenen rand.

Boven het omlopende fries een eenvoudig geprofileerde gootlijst. De O-gevel heeft een hoge gepleisterde plint, links een zesruits venster en in het midden een drietal gekoppelde bovenlichten. Van het hogere volume is de W-gevel deels gepleisterd en op de verdieping voorzien van een gepleisterde en brede gecassetteerde cordonlijst, en houten balcons op gietijzeren opengewerkte consoles, met hekwerk en vierkante posten. Op de verdieping een drietal centrale vensters methalfrond bovenlicht. Bij de balcons vensters met bovenlichtonder kleine kroonlijst op consoles. Gevelbeëindiging met kroonlijst na brede overstek. Kroonlijst met frontonvormige onderbreking boven de drie centrale vensters. Onder de kroonlijst een houten bewerkte windveer. Op de hoeken van degevel en de hoeken van de frontonvormige onderbreking enkele houten ornamenten. De Z-gevel heeft een gepleisterde plint waarin twee kleine vierkante kelderopeningen. Op de begane grond een grote vensterpartij bestaande uit drie gekoppelde zesruits schuifvensters onder hoofdgestel en vier houten pilasters aan weerszijden. Breed fries met cassettes als cordonlijst aansluitend op het fries van het lagere dwarsvolume. Houten balcon met hekwerk en vierkante houten pijlers, bereikbaar via dubbele balcondeuren met elk zesruits roedenverdeling in omlijsting en een middenpilaster, afgesloten door een hoofdgestel. Verder een viertal rozetankers. In de puntvormige topgevel een gepleisterd cirkelvormig ornament. Het dakoverstek bevat geschulpte windveren, hanebalk en onderaan versierde makelaar. De N-gevel bevat zesruits schuifvemnsters; één vensteras links (W) en twee vensterassen rechts (O) van het lagere dwarsvolume. De puntvormig beëindigde O-gevel bevat beneden een zesruits schuifvenster.

Waardering

Café-restaurant van de midden-negentiende-eeuwse uitspanning "'t Tolhuis" van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische en typologische waarde. Verder van situationeel belang wegens de beeldbepalende en historisch-functionele ligging aan de voornaamste entree tot Amsterdam-Noord in de Buiksloterham.

Introduction

Description

On a ground plan originally T-shaped in yellow brick with one and two storeys under an assembly of gently sloping tiled hipped and gabled roofs with large overhang and cut roof lines erected café-restaurant. The north-south oriented transversely placed main volume has two storeys, the one-storey east-west volume has five bays and contains a built-on entrance portico on the short south side, with on the left a one-storey narrow window section wide extension and on the right a three-window section wide extension, both provided with plinth and moulded gutter line. The entrance portico has a gabled roof with broad overhang on cut consoles and is provided at the ends with wind braces cut in the same manner. Access section with double glazed panel door. Above the calf a semicircular fanlight with star-flower tracery in a broad moulded wooden frame. The west facade has a plastered plinth and five double six-pane glazed panel doors with above the calf a semicircular fanlight with vertical glazing bar. Simple continuous brick edge.

Above the continuous frieze a simply moulded gutter line. The east facade has a high plastered plinth, on the left a six-pane window and in the middle three coupled fanlights. Of the higher volume the west facade is partly plastered and on the upper storey provided with a plastered and broad coffered string course, and wooden balconies on cast iron openwork consoles, with railings and square posts. On the upper storey three central windows with semicircular fanlight. At the balconies windows with fanlight under small cornice on consoles. Facade termination with cornice after broad overhang. Cornice with pediment-shaped interruption above the three central windows. Below the cornice a wooden worked wind brace. On the corners of the facade and the corners of the pediment-shaped interruption a few wooden ornaments. The south facade has a plastered plinth in which two small square cellar openings. On the ground floor a large window arrangement consisting of three coupled six-pane sash windows under a main frame and four wooden pilasters on both sides. Broad frieze with cassettes as string course adjoining the frieze of the lower transverse volume. Wooden balcony with railings and square wooden pillars, accessible via double balcony doors each with six-pane glazing bars in frame and a centre pilaster, closed off by a main frame. Further four rose anchors. In the pointed top gable a plastered circular ornament. The roof overhang contains scalloped wind braces, hanebalk and decorated modillions at the bottom. The north facade contains six-pane sash windows; one window section on the left (west) and two window sections on the right (east) of the lower transverse volume. The pointed terminating east facade contains below a six-pane sash window.

Appreciation

Café-restaurant of the mid-nineteenth-century public house "'t Tolhuis" of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical and typological value. Furthermore of situational importance because of the image-defining and historically-functional location at the principal entrance to Amsterdam-North in the Buiksloterham.
