Inleiding
Op het uiteinde van Steiger 10 aan de zuidoever van het IJ in 1932-1933 opgetrokken REDERIJKANTOOR onder invloeden van het Nieuwe Bouwen naar een ontwerp van J. de Meijer in opdracht van J.H. Smits namens het rederijkantoor de N.V. Vrachtvaartdienst 'West Friesland'.
Omschrijving
Op een nagenoeg rechthoekige plattegrond gerealiseerd wit gepleisterd betonnen gebouwtje bestaande uit twee in- en uitspringende bouwmassa's: aan de zuidzijde een blokvormig bouwvolume en aan de noordkant een hoger bouwvolume met halfronde beëindiging die grotenddeels bestaat uit staal en glas met vertikale onderverdeling (in twee lagen van 12 ruiten boven en onder een zwaarder uitgevoerd gebogen staalprofiel). Beide éénlaags bouwmassa's worden gedekt door een plat dak. Alle raamstroken zijn gevat in smalle staalprofielen. Aan de waterzijde (NO) een toren met luifel aan de bovenzijde. De naar achter gelegen ingang bevindt zich aan de voorzijde (Z) in de vorm van een rechthoekige deur met luifel. Aan de rechterzijkant (O) een tweede ingang. In de westgevel twee ronde bovenlichten. De ventilatiepijp met kapje is nog origineel.
Waardering
Voormalig rederijkantoor in een Late Amsterdamse School bouwtrant met invloeden van het Nieuwe Bouwen van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde. Eveneens van belang vanwege de typologische zeldzaamheid en de beeldbepalende, met de oorspronkelijke functie voor het regionale transport over water verbonden situering op een steiger in het IJ.

Description
On a virtually rectangular plan realised as a white rendered concrete building comprising two advancing and receding building masses: on the south side a cubic building volume and on the north side a higher building volume with semi-circular termination consisting largely of steel and glass with vertical subdivision (in two layers of 12 panes above and below a heavier curved steel profile). Both single-storey building masses are covered by a flat roof. All window strips are set in slender steel profiles. On the waterside (NE) a tower with canopy at the top. The entrance located to the rear is situated on the front (S) in the form of a rectangular door with canopy. On the right side (E) a second entrance. In the west gable two round fanlights. The ventilation pipe with cap is still original.
Valuation
Former shipping company office in a Late Amsterdam School building tradition with influences of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement of general importance on account of cultural and architectural-historical value. Also important on account of its typological rarity and its visually defining situation on a pier in the IJ connected to its original function for regional water transport.
