Inleiding
OFFICIERSMESS MET LOGEMENT, onderdeel uitmakend van het militaire complex "Logement Duitse Officieren" te Den Helder. De mess met logement is gelegen op het oostelijk deel van het erf.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand pand, ten behoeve van officiersmess en legering van officieren, gebouwd op F-vormig grondplan. Het pand bestaat uit één bouwlaag onder schilddak met flauwe dakhelling. De noklijn van het logementgedeelte (de lange dwarspoot van de F) loopt evenwijdig aan de Duinweg, de noklijn van het casinogedeelte staat loodrecht hierop. Het dak heeft een bedekking van bitumen. Op de nok staan twee korte schoorstenen. Het pand is gedeeltelijk onderkelderd, onder andere met een regenkelder.
De constructie van het gebouw bestaat uit een skelet en muren van (gewapend) beton, in het exterieur bekleed met baksteen. Constructieve gevelonderdelen en details, zoals de plint, zuilen, lekdorpels, venster- en deuromlijstingen, dakgoot, traptreden en bordessen, zijn uitgevoerd in sierbeton, ter imitatie van natuursteen. De gevels van het logementgedeelte zijn opgetrokken in baksteen boven een sierbetonnen plint. De gevels van het messgedeelte zijn opgetrokken op een omlopend bordes met drie traptreden. De drie zalen van de mess, gelegen aan drie verschillende zijden van het gebouw, zijn bereikbaar via de bordessen waarop zuilengalerijen zijn geplaatst.
De gevel aan de Duinweg (N) bevat links een gevel van het logementgedeelte, rechts een bordes dat toegang geeft tot een (kleine) zaal van het casino. Het linkerdeel heeft een breedte van vijf traveeën. Elke travee bevat twee staande houten vensters, met achtruits roedenverdeling, die gescheiden worden door een stijl van sierbeton. Het rechterdeel heeft een bordes met vijf zuilen en is vier traveeën breed. Elke travee bevat twee openslaande stalen paneeldeuren met glas. De bovenlichten van de deuren hebben ofwel diagonaal geplaatste roeden, ofwel horizontaal geplaatste roeden.
De rechterzijgevel (W) is de hoofdgevel van het messgedeelte; deze heeft een symmetrische indeling. Geheel links en rechts is het overstek van de zuilengalerij van de kleine zalen te zien. Daartussen bevindt zich het centrale bordes dat toegang geeft tot de grote zaal, met aan weerszijden een ingangspartij en een getoogde vensteras. Het centrale bordes heeft een zuilengalerij met zeven zuilen. De openslaande deuren op het bordes hebben dezelfde vorm als die in de voorgevel. Aan weerszijden van de zuilengalerij bevindt zich een risalerende ingangspartij met rechthoekige houten deur met zijlichten. Boven de deur is een klein rond venster geplaatst. Geheel links en rechts bevindt zich een getoogde vensteras, die in oorsprong een dubbele deur met getoogd bovenlicht (met zesruits roedenverdeling) bevatte.
De achtergevel (Z) heeft een bordes, zuilengalerij en openslaande deuren als in de voorgevel. Het bordes geeft toegang tot de tweede kleine zaal van de mess.
De linkerzijgevel (O) bevat een kleine uitbouw (de korte dwarspoot van de F), de achtergevel van de grote messzaal en de uitbouw ten behoeve van het logement (de lange dwarspoot van de F). De korte uitbouw bestaat uit een rechthoekig bouwvolume met rechthoekige staande gekoppelde vensters. De achtergevel van de grote messzaal bevat vier openslaande deuren, die dezelfde vorm hebben als die in de voorgevel. De deuren komen uit op een bordes (zonder zuilengalerij). De uitbouw van het logement bevat aan de zuidzijde hooggeplaatste zesruits vensters en vier rechthoekige staande vensters in twee koppels van twee. De kopgevel van het logement (O) bevat een centrale ingang, bestaande uit een rechthoekige houten deur met zesruits bovenlicht en bordes met vier treden. De ingang wordt geflankeerd door twee gekoppelde staande vensters met achtruits roedenverdeling. De voorgevel van het logement aan de straatzijde is beschreven bij de voorgevel (N).
Het interieur is nog gedeeltelijk in originele staat en bevat onder andere in drie zalen de oorspronkelijke houten lambrizeringen. In de grote zaal is het gestucte plafond met drie cirkels nog aanwezig, waarin oorspronkelijk waarschijnlijk lampen waren aangebracht. De eikenhouten binnendeuren met smeedijzeren hang- en sluitwerk zijn ook nog intact. In de hal van de hoofdingang zijn de wanden bekleed met travertin.
Waardering
De officiersmess met logement is van algemeen belang als historisch-functioneel hoofdonderdeel van het militair complex "Logement Duitse Officieren". Daarnaast is het object van belang uit architectuurhistorisch oogpunt als gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een officiersmess met militair logement in traditionalistische bouwtrant uit begin jaren '40.

Detached building, intended for officers' mess and officers' lodgings, built on an F-shaped floor plan. The building consists of one storey under a hipped roof with a shallow pitch. The ridge line of the logement section (the long crosspiece of the F) runs parallel to the Duinweg, the ridge line of the casino section is perpendicular to it. The roof is covered with bitumen. Two short chimneys stand on the ridge. The building is partially cellared, including with a rainwater cellar.
The construction of the building consists of a skeleton and walls of (reinforced) concrete, clad on the exterior with brick. Structural façade components and details, such as the plinth, columns, drip mouldings, window and door surrounds, roof gutter, steps and platforms, are executed in ornamental concrete, imitating natural stone. The façades of the logement section are raised in brick above an ornamental concrete plinth. The façades of the mess section are raised on a continuous platform with three steps. The three halls of the mess, located on three different sides of the building, are accessible via the platforms on which columned galleries are placed.

The interior is still partially in original state and contains, among other things, in three halls the original wooden wainscoting. The oak wood internal doors with wrought iron hinges and fastenings are also still intact. In the hall of the main entrance, the walls are clad with travertine.
